Introduction to lemon

Lemons are generally used for beauty purposes, but I didn’t expect that lemon is also the “nemesis” of scurvy and is also a very good Chinese medicine.

Lemon lemon

It is also called lemon fruit or citron. It is very sour and is the favorite food of pregnant women with liver deficiency. Therefore, it is also called Yimu fruit or Yimuzi. The young leaves and flowers of lemon are purple-red. The fruit is oblong or oval, the size of an egg, and light yellow. The surface is rough and the top is nipple-shaped. The peel is thick and fragrant. The juice is sour and can be used to prepare beverages and can also be extracted into spices. The United States and Italy are famous lemon producing areas, while France is the country with the most lemons in the world.

Lemon is known as the "mysterious medicinal fruit" and is one of the fruits with the most medicinal value in the world. It is rich in vitamin C, citric acid, malic acid, high sodium and low potassium, and regular consumption can prevent and treat scurvy.

The earliest research on the treatment of scurvy began with British doctor Lind. In the middle of the 18th century, he began to try fresh vegetables, fruits and medicines to conduct medical experiments on patients with scurvy. Once, when he was treating scurvy on the sailors of the British ship "Sea No. 5", he selected some sailors and divided them into 6 groups. He used different methods for treatment, such as different foods, medicines and physical therapy methods. The result was unexpected. The patients who took the medicine showed no improvement. On the contrary, the patients who ate lemons were like taking a "magic pill". The disease was cured and they quickly recovered.

More than 40 years later, the British Navy adopted this method and stipulated that sailors must drink a certain amount of lemon leaf water every day while at sea. After only two years, scurvy was eradicated in the British Navy. From then on, the British often used the interesting nickname "Lemon Man" to refer to their sailors.

Lemon Origin

According to the data, there is no accurate conclusion about the origin of lemon. Some say it is in Malaysia, while others say it is in southwest China and southwest Myanmar, or in the eastern area of the southern foot of the Himalayas. At present, it is distributed in the Mediterranean coast, Southeast Asia and America, and is also cultivated in Taiwan, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi and other places in China. The main lemon producing countries are now the United States, Italy, Greece and Spain. Among them, the United States and Italy are famous lemon producing areas, while France is the country with the most lemons in the world.

Anyue County, Ziyang City, Sichuan Province, China is the only lemon commodity production base in China and the hometown of lemons in China. Its products are exported to more than 10 countries and regions including Russia, Kazakhstan, Hong Kong, and Macau, as well as more than 20 large and medium-sized cities in China. Its output, scale, and market share account for more than 70% of the country.
