How to grow a large crabapple tree How to grow a large crabapple tree

The large crabapple tree has strong vitality, and its thick bark can withstand a certain degree of cold, and it is also drought-resistant. The success rate of planting a large crabapple tree is very high. Let's share the cultivation method of the large crabapple tree below.

1. How to grow crabapple trees

Pot selection: Deep rectangular or oval pots are often used for crabapple trees, square and round pots are also acceptable, and deep thousand-tube pots are used for cliff-style trees. Purple clay pots or glazed pottery pots are preferred, but other textures are also acceptable.
Soil: The planting of crabapple trees is not very demanding on soil quality. Slightly acidic soil or neutral soil can be used, but loose, fertile, well-drained leaf humus or farmland soil is preferred. When potting, a layer of sand or vermiculite should be placed at the bottom of the pot to facilitate drainage.

Planting: Spring and autumn are both suitable, preferably during the dormant period. Before planting, the thick and long roots of the crabapple tree should be cut short, and the roots should not be twisted in the pot. After planting, water thoroughly, place in a shaded place for 1 to 2 weeks, and then move to a place with sufficient light.
Reproduction: The main methods of propagation of crabapple trees are division, cuttings and layering, and sowing can also be used. Sowing propagation can produce a large number of neat seedlings, but it is not easy to maintain the original variety characteristics. Crabapple trees have strong tillering ability. The mother plant can be dug out and divided in autumn or early spring, and divided into 2 to 3 branches per plant. Division can be carried out again 3 years after planting. Generally, after division in autumn, it is transplanted to promote wound healing. It can be planted in the spring of the following year and bloom the following year. The period of hard branch cuttings is the same as that of division. During the growing season, tender plant cuttings can also be carried out. The plant segments about 15 cm long are inserted into plain sand or plain soil, watered thoroughly and moisturized, and leaves can be produced after more than a month. Cutting seedlings can bloom in 2 to 3 years.

How to grow a crabapple tree? The crabapple tree likes light and tolerates semi-shade. It is highly adaptable, cold-resistant and drought-resistant. It is not very demanding on soil. It can generally be cultivated in well-drained land, but avoid low-lying and saline-alkali land. 1. Planting and requirements: Crabapple trees are generally planted in the ground, and can also be potted to make bonsai. Planting in spring should avoid waterlogging and should be planted in a slightly higher place that is not easy to accumulate water and sunny. The soil is neutral and alkaline, with a pH value of not less than 7. The soil should be loose, but not too fertile. Too fertile will easily cause leggy growth and reduce flowering. The planting hole should be determined according to the size of the root system. It should not be too deep or too large, so that the root system can be stretched. The planting depth should be 10 cm from the ground. It is best to plant with a soil ball. Water it enough after planting.

2. Light and temperature:

The crabapple tree grows best in an environment with sufficient light, but not in a shaded environment. If you plant the crabapple tree in a pot, place it in a place with sufficient light during the growing season. It will not be damaged by freezing even in the low temperature of -15℃ in winter, and can overwinter outdoors. However, in an abnormally cold winter, you need to take anti-cold measures.

3. Watering and fertilizing:

Water the crabapple tree and fertilize it. Apply a large amount of fertilizer after the leaves fall in autumn every year to replenish the nutrients consumed by the flowers and fruits. It is better to apply decomposed organic fertilizer. At the same time, combine it with winter irrigation and watering. Apply organic fertilizer once before the spring buds move, and water it thoroughly once. The fertilization method in autumn and winter varies according to the age of the tree. For young trees, fertilize them in a ring shape, with the ring distance within 100 cm from the root of the tree; for older trees, fertilize them radially; for old trees, remove weeds in the middle, spread organic fertilizer under the crown, and turn the fertilizer 30 cm into the ground after application. Apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizers twice after the flowers fade to ensure a certain fruit setting rate. At the same time, pay attention to watering.

4. Shaping and pruning:

The flower buds of crabapple are mostly differentiated from the terminal buds, and the medium and short fruit branches are the main flower branches, so the medium and short fruit branches should be retained. Long branches should be cut short, and dense branches, dry branches, diseased branches, and insect-infested branches should also be cut off, and then the tree shape should be pruned according to the desired shape. If you want to make the crown of the crabapple tree round, you should sparse the density, cut off the dense branches, and vertically prune the parts with sparse branches so that they can have more side branches and be simple and empty.
