1. Fine land preparation

Kidney beans are leguminous crops with dicotyledons and poor soil-penetrating ability. They require soft soil texture and must be harrowed after plowing to make the soil plow layer loose on the top and solid on the bottom. Dry land should be fully fertilized at one time, generally 1500 kg of farmyard manure, 30 kg of ammonium carbonate, and 30 kg of superphosphate; 2500 kg of farmyard manure, 50 kg of ammonium carbonate, and 50 kg of superphosphate per mu of water land. The soil should be treated with chemicals before sowing to prevent underground pests from harming the seedlings.

2. Sowing at the right time

1. Seed selection: Choose high-quality varieties with good commercial quality and high yield. The seed purity is required to reach 98%, and the germination rate should be no less than 85%. The seeds should be exposed to the sun for 1-2 days before sowing.

2. Mix seeds with chemicals: Mix 150-200 grams of carbendazim fungicide for every 100 kilograms of seeds to prevent root rot (dam rot).

3. Sowing at the right time: Determine the appropriate sowing time according to the variety's growth period requirements and the early or late frost. The sowing time along the Great Wall in northern Shaanxi (Jingbian County) is generally suitable for early June, with a sowing depth of 3-5cm. Sowing is done by hole sowing or row sowing; 4,000 holes per mu of mountain dry land, 2-3 seeds per hole, 50cm row spacing, 33cm hole spacing, 2 seedlings per hole, 8,000 seedlings per mu, first prepare the land for sowing or spot sowing;

For irrigated land, 5,000 holes are planted per mu, with a row spacing of 50 cm and a hole spacing of 25 cm. 2-3 seeds are planted in each hole, and 10,000 seedlings are left per mu. When planting seeds, the seeds must be stepped into the moist soil with your feet, and then covered with soil. If row sowing is used, a roller must be used for pressing.

3. Field Management

1. Check the seedlings in time: according to the soil texture, or whether there is a thunderstorm after sowing and before the seedlings emerge, if the soil texture is found to be compacted, break up the compacted soil to ensure that the seedlings emerge in time.

2. Timely transplanting: After the kidney beans emerge and two true leaves appear, they should be transplanted in time.

3. Intertillage and seedling weeding: The first weeding should be done in conjunction with transplanting. For dry land, weeding can be done a second time before flowering depending on the weed situation. For irrigated land, weeding must be done if weeds are found after each irrigation. Weeding should be completed three times before flowering to prevent weed shortage.

4. Watering and topdressing: Apply topdressing to irrigated land according to soil conditions. Apply 8 kg of urea per mu to prevent fertilizer deficiency. Spray 0.3% potassium diphosphate foliar fertilizer once before kidney beans bloom.

5. Disease and pest control: Kidney beans are common beans. Various diseases and pests occur from time to time. If pests and diseases are found, they should be controlled in time.

4. Harvest at the right time

Timely harvesting of kidney beans is the key to ensuring commodity quality. Kidney beans must be harvested on sunny days. After harvesting, they should be placed in the field for 3-5 days and then dried and threshed. Threshing kidney beans when the water content is high will easily increase imperfect grains. The threshed kidney beans cannot be exposed to strong sunlight, as kidney beans exposed to the sun will easily become hollow, affecting commodity quality.
