However, Scrophularia ningpoensis is bitter and can laxative, clear away heat, detoxify and relieve sore throat. Rehmannia glutinosa is specifically used to nourish the kidney and yin, and can be used as a long-term yin-nourishing medicine.

Scrophularia is a salty and cold product with moist and rich fluid. It nourishes yin, reduces fire, detoxifies and relieves rouge. When combined with fresh radix rehmanniae, cortex moutan, and red peony root, it can clear away heat and cool blood; when combined with large radix rehmanniae and ophiopogon japonicus, it can nourish yin and increase fluid; when combined with burdock seeds and isatis root, it can detoxify and relieve sore throat; when combined with large radix rehmanniae, cassia bark, buddlejac, and cicada shell, it can improve eyesight and remove cataracts; when combined with oyster, fritillaria, and prunella vulgaris, it can disperse nodules and eliminate scrofula; when combined with honeysuckle, angelica, and liquorice, it can detoxify and reduce swelling.
