Why are there bugs in bayberry?

In fact, bayberry has always been prone to insects. This is not news in bayberry-growing areas and among people who often eat bayberry.

The reason why bayberry is prone to insects is related to its fruit characteristics. The part of the bayberry fruit that we eat is a derivative of its exocarp - a soft and juicy tissue formed by the columnar protrusions of the outer layer of cells of the exocarp. In other words, the edible part of the bayberry is already the outermost layer of the fruit, and there is no peel outside to play a protective role. Therefore, insects can easily invade the fruit and lay eggs.

Fruits like bayberry are not common in the fruit world. Other fruits are protected by the peel, so although they can get worms, they are not as serious as bayberry. Another tragic fruit is the fig, which has a hole on its surface that goes straight to the inside, so it has weak defense like bayberry. A kind of fig wasp often drills into its interior to live.

The small insects in bayberry are mainly fruit fly larvae. Fruit flies come to lay eggs after the bayberry matures and softens. Raw bayberry cannot be food for fruit flies. Fruit fly larvae are not particularly toxic, so if you accidentally eat them, it will not cause much harm.

Expert: There are indeed bugs in bayberry, but they have no major impact on the human body

Many people do not care about the bugs in bayberry when they eat it, and even eat the bayberry with the bugs in it. As for the saying that it is "rich in nutrients" on the Internet, it is just self-righteousness.
