Pharmacology

Sweet, neutral. ① "Southern Yunnan Materia Medica": "Normal taste." ② "Compendium of Materia Medica": "Sweet and salty, neutral, non-toxic." ③ "New Materia Medica": "Sweet and astringent, neutral." Meridians enter the spleen and kidney meridians. ① "Depei Materia Medica": "Enters the qi of the foot taiyin meridian." ② "Bencao Qiuzhen": "Enters the kidney and also the stomach.

Function and indications

Strengthens the spleen and kidneys. Treats spleen and stomach weakness, diarrhea, vomiting, thirst, spermatorrhea, leucorrhea, leucorrhea, and frequent urination.

① "Southern Yunnan Materia Medica": "It can treat spleen and earth deficiency, stimulate appetite and strengthen the spleen."

② "Compendium of Materia Medica": "It can regulate the middle qi, nourish the kidney and strengthen the stomach, harmonize the five internal organs, regulate the Ying and Wei, and produce essence. It can stop thirst, vomiting, diarrhea, frequent urination, and detoxify rat poison."

③ "Compendium of Materia Medica": "It can disperse blood and reduce swelling, and detoxify heat."

④ "Yi Lin Zong Yao": "It nourishes the heart and drains the kidneys, infiltrates water, promotes urination, and lowers turbidity and raises clarity."

⑤ "Sichuan Chinese Medicine Records": "It nourishes yin and kidney, strengthens spleen and stomach, and helps digestion. It treats abdominal distension due to food accumulation, leucorrhea, leucorrhea, and spermatorrhea due to kidney deficiency."

Dosage

Internal use: decoct soup, cook porridge, and in the north, it is mostly used to make sticky cakes and bean curd fillings; in the south, it is mostly used for cooking, stir-frying, cold salad, stir-frying with auxiliary ingredients such as green pepper, and also as a condiment for various soups and noodles. It can be dried and mostly used as a dried vegetable in the north, which can be stir-fried with meat or made into hot and sour soup alone.

Practical options

1. Treat abdominal distension and belching caused by food stagnation: chew and swallow an appropriate amount of raw cowpea, or mash and dissolve in cold water. Selected from (Chengdu "Common Herbal Treatment Manual")

2. Treat leucorrhea and leucorrhea: stew cowpea, vine vegetable and chicken. Selected from (Sichuan Chinese Medicine Records)

3. Treat snake bites: Cowpea, Mountain Sagittaria, cherry leaves, soybean leaves. Mash them into fluff and apply externally. Selected from (Chengdu "Common Herbal Treatment Manual")

Medicinal Diet

1. Take an appropriate amount of raw cowpea, chew it carefully and swallow it or take it with cold water to treat abdominal distension caused by food accumulation and warm the body.

2. Cowpea soup: 100 grams of dried cowpea, decocted in water and drank the soup, to treat diabetes, thirst, and frequent urination.

3. Cowpea porridge: 100g cowpea, 150g polished rice, appropriate amount of salt and monosodium glutamate. Wash the cowpea, soak it in clean water until it swells and set aside. Wash the polished rice, put it in a pot, add cowpea and enough clean water, boil it with high heat first, then simmer it with low heat until the cowpea and polished rice are cooked. Then add refined salt, monosodium glutamate, etc. and it is ready to eat.

4. Cowpea stewed with chicken: 100g cowpea, 30g vine vegetable, 100g chicken, cooking wine, scallion, ginger, salt, and MSG. Wash the chicken and cut it into small pieces. Rinse the cowpea and vine vegetable, cut them into sections, put them into the pot with the chicken, add water, cooking wine, scallion, ginger, salt, etc., boil over high heat first, then simmer over low heat. When the chicken and cowpea are cooked, add chicken essence (MSG is also OK) to season and serve as a dish.
