Salmon is actually a very strange fish. It is born in freshwater rivers, but swims out to the sea during its growth period, grows up in saltwater environments, forages for food, and travels thousands of miles to its home in freshwater environments to give birth to the next generation during the spawning season. This cycle continues endlessly.

At the salmon breeding center east of Seattle, salmon from thousands of miles away swim upstream with great effort, battling the rushing downstream current. Occasionally, a large salmon, which may be up to 60 centimeters in length, leaps up a meter-high fish ladder with a "swish", creating a scene full of dynamic beauty.

What is the "fish ladder" mentioned here? It turns out that salmon have the nature to swim upstream during the spawning period. In the natural environment, they will swim upstream along the turbulent river and then start to spawn. However, with the opening of human roads and farmland, many rivers suitable for them to swim upstream have disappeared. Therefore, conservation units have made artificial rivers: "fish ladders", creating a one-meter drop every few meters so that salmon can jump upstream. Interestingly, someone once did an experiment to let salmon swim to the spawning grounds in a stable river, eliminating the process of swimming upstream and jumping. In this way, the salmon could not lay eggs, because the kinetic energy and hard work of swimming upstream are actually the best recipe for them to give birth. For this reason, such a unique "fish ladder" is built in the breeding center.
