How to Grow Cowpeas

How to Grow Cowpeas

If we plant cowpeas in the garden at home, it is very convenient to eat. So today I will tell you how to plant cowpeas better:

Beans can be broadcast live

Seedlings can also be raised and transplanted. Generally, seedlings are raised and transplanted. Through seedlings and transplanting, vegetative growth can be appropriately inhibited and reproductive growth can be promoted. Seedlings are raised in nutrient pots or heat-insulated seedbeds. The sowing amount is about 2.5kg per 667m2. Seedlings are generally raised in greenhouses, and nutrient soil seedbeds and nutrient pots should be prepared before sowing. The nutrient soil seedbed should be plowed in advance, pounded and raked flat, and about 1000kg of decomposed organic fertilizer should be applied per 667m2. If seedlings are raised in nutrient pots, the diameter of the nutrient pot should not be less than 8cm and the height should not be less than 10cm. Then sow 3 to 4 large and full seeds in 7 to 8cm square on the flat bed (also sow 3 to 4 seeds in the nutrient pot), water the bottom, cover with 0.5cm thick nutrient soil, and then lay the ground film flat, and then use a small arch shed for insulation. After sowing, seedlings can emerge in 4 to 7 days under normal circumstances. The ground film should be removed in time after the seedlings emerge, but the small arch shed should still be uncovered during the day and covered at night. After the seedlings emerge, the temperature should be kept at 20-25℃ during the day. The greenhouse should be kept warm and ventilated to ensure that the seedlings grow neatly and robustly. The soil in the bed should not be too wet during the seed germination and seedling stage, so as not to reduce the germination rate or cause the seedlings to grow too tall or even rot and die.

The planting period of beans should be determined according to the cultivation method and growth indicators. When using nutrient soil blocks for seedling cultivation, it is generally possible to plant when the first compound leaf unfolds. When using nutrient pots for seedling cultivation, planting can be delayed until 2 to 3 compound leaves appear. Greenhouse cultivation is planted in late March, small arch greenhouse cultivation is planted in early April, mulch cultivation is planted in mid-April, and open field cultivation is planted in late April. When using nutrient pots for seedling cultivation, a hole puncher should be used for transplanting. When using nutrient soil for seedling cultivation, a planting knife should be used for planting. After planting, water the roots, fill with fine soil, and seal the planting holes. Generally, 2 rows are planted per 1.8m wide furrow (including furrows), with a row spacing of 80 to 100cm, a hole spacing of 22 to 25cm, and 3,000 holes are planted per 667m2.

It is not advisable to apply too much fertilizer in the early stage of beans

Prevent excessive fertilizer and water from causing leggy growth and affecting flowering and pod formation. After the plants have survived, water them with decomposed manure water once. After the plants have bloomed and pod formed, topdress them 2 to 3 times in general, with 5 to 15 kg of urea or 750 to 1000 kg of decomposed human feces and urine per 667 m2 each time to promote plant growth, more flowering and more pod formation. During the peak harvest period of bean pods, fertilizer and water should be increased. If there is a lack of fertilizer and water at this time, the flowers and pods will fall, and the growth of the stems and vines will decline (Table 1). The flowers of the beans can be turned over after pinching, which can extend the harvest period. After the vines are pulled out, the frame should be set up in time, with a height of 2.0 to 2.5 m. After the frame is set up, the vines should be guided in time. The vines should be guided in the afternoon on sunny days, not on rainy days or in the morning to prevent them from breaking. Reasonable pruning can make the stems and vines evenly distributed and improve the utilization rate of light energy. Use the main vines and side vines to set pods, increase the number of inflorescences and their pod setting rate, extend the harvest period, and increase the yield. To this end, appropriately select side vines, remove weak vines and those that produce the first inflorescence late, and select side vines that grow strongly and produce the first inflorescence early. Among them, the side vines that grow above the middle of the main vine should be topped with 4 to 5 leaves after the first inflorescence is pulled out to increase the number of inflorescences and promote their good development. The main vine can also be topped when it grows to the top of the trellis and is about 2 meters long. This promotes the formation of secondary flower buds on each inflorescence and also facilitates the harvesting of pods.

When the young pods are full but the seeds are not yet visible, it is the right time to harvest. Generally, the commercial pods are harvested 11 to 13 days after flowering. When harvesting, do not damage other buds on the inflorescence. After harvesting, tie them into bundles and pack them for sale.

Pay attention to the prevention and control of the main diseases of beans.

Rust can infect stems, leaves and pods, producing dense red rust spots on leaves, making pods inedible. The prevention and control method is to spray 25% triamcinol with 1000-1200 times water at the early stage of the disease. The adult bean borer lays eggs in flower buds and tender shoots, invades flower buds after hatching, and then invades pods to eat young beans, causing accumulation of excrement inside pods and outside boreholes, making them inedible. The prevention and control method is to pay attention to field inspections and spray 2.5% cypermethrin or cypermethrin with 2000 times water 2-3 times during the peak period of egg hatching.

Legume vegetables mainly include lentils, beans, peas, cowpeas, etc. Most people only know that they contain more high-quality protein and unsaturated fatty acids (good fats), and that their mineral and vitamin content is also higher than other vegetables, but they don’t know that they also have important medicinal value.
