I think many of my friends in cities have not seen the knowledge about bitter melon trellis. Let’s take a look at it below.

The stem of bitter melon is a creeping plant. The axillary buds of each node of the main vine are very active. Generally, side vines begin to grow from the first axillary bud, and each node can grow side vines. The axillary buds of each node of the side vine can also grow secondary side vines, forming a relatively luxuriant vine and leaf system. After the vines grow, a trellis should be set up in time to guide the vines, and the vine-tightening method should be selected according to different trellising methods. According to different production habits in different places, the trellising methods are different. Commonly used trellising methods include herringbone trellis, improved herringbone trellis, horizontal trellis, single-row fence trellis, double-row fence trellis, etc.

1. Herringbone cross

This is the most commonly used way to build a trellis. When preparing the land, make ridges with a width of 1.5 meters (including the ditch). Plant the bitter melon seedlings on both sides of the ridges with a spacing of 45 to 50 cm. Plant 1,800 to 2,000 plants per mu. When the melon seedlings grow to about 60 cm, build a "human" frame in time to guide the vines. Insert a 2 to 3 meter long bamboo pole with a base diameter of the thumb at the inner side of each melon seedling 10 cm away from the root. The two opposite bamboo poles are tilted inward and crossed into a "human" shape. Put a horizontal bar above and below the intersection, and tighten each intersection to form a solid "human" shaped trellis. When guiding the vines, climb clockwise along the pole, and use a thin rope to tie a slipknot about 10 cm below the top of the plant to fix it. After that, tie the vines once every 4 to 5 nodes. When the plant is more than 1.5 meters tall, remove the side vines below 80 cm of the plant. Leave a bud on one side of the root of the plant next to the missing seedling, and wait for this bud to grow into a vine and lead it to the missing seedling position. The herringbone frame is strong, wind-resistant, and easy to operate, but in the later stage of plant growth, the dense branches and vines on the top are easy to form a canopy, resulting in poor ventilation.

2. Improved herringbone cross

Bamboo poles are placed horizontally on the "H" frame to connect the H frames of each ridge. For the convenience of operation, the intersection of the H frames can be raised to 1.4-1.5 meters. The vine guiding and vine beating methods of the improved H frame are similar to those of the H frame. This frame setting method has the characteristics of the H frame and the trellis. After the stems and vines are placed on the frame, they are distributed horizontally, which expands the growth space of the stems and vines and avoids the disadvantages of poor ventilation and light transmission of the general H frame.

3. Horizontal scaffolding

The width of the ridge is 1.5 meters (including the ditch), and the vines are planted in a single row in the center of each ridge, with a spacing of 60 to 80 cm, and 500 to 700 plants are planted per mu. When the melon seedlings grow to about 60 cm, insert a bamboo pole 10 cm away from the root of the melon seedlings, and add a bamboo pole longitudinally 1.5 to 1.6 meters away from the ridge surface. Then use the bamboo pole to connect with other ridges to form a trellis, and tie it with a plastic rope. When guiding the vines, climb clockwise along the pole, and use a thin rope to tie a slipknot about 10 cm below the top of the plant to fix it. After that, tie the vines every 4 to 5 sections, and remove all side vines below the trellis. In order to make the stems and vines evenly distributed on the trellis, the side vines can be pulled in different directions. The horizontal trellis has the characteristics of good ventilation and light transmission, and less vine work, but its wind resistance is poor. In seasons or areas with strong winds, it is necessary to pay attention to reinforcement to avoid tilting the trellis.
