Types of Lentils

White lentil is also known as small sword bean. It is an annual twining herb. The leaves are trifoliate, the leaflets of the first are rhombus-shaped and broadly ovate, and the leaflets of the lateral leaves are obliquely rhombus-shaped and broadly ovate, with short or acuminate tips, and white short soft hairs along the veins on both sides. The corolla is white or purple-red; the ovary has silky hairs, glands at the base, and white whiskers near the top of the style. There are 3 to 5 seeds, white or purple-black. The flowering and fruiting period is from July to October.

White lentil likes warm and humid climate, but is afraid of frost. Frost damage may affect growth or even kill the plant. It needs to be moist during the seedling stage, and attention should be paid to watering. White lentil likes to be planted on fertile, well-drained sandy soil.

White lentil requires drought during flowering, high humidity in the air and soil, and easy to fall. The germination rate of white lentil seeds is over 90%. The temperature is 16-20℃, with sufficient humidity, and the seedlings emerge 10-14 days after sowing.

White lentils have high nutritional value. Their mineral and vitamin content is higher than most root vegetables and melon vegetables, and they taste fresh and delicious.

White lentils are rich in protein, glucose, sucrose, raffinose, stachyose, maltose, L-piperidin, lectin, etc.

White lentil has the effect of tonifying the spleen and stomach, removing dampness and relieving heat. It is mainly used to treat loss of appetite, spleen and stomach weakness, chest tightness and abdominal distension, excessive leucorrhea, loose stools, and vomiting and diarrhea due to summer heat and dampness.

White lentils are harvested in September and October when the shell turns yellow-white and slightly wrinkled, and lentil flowers are picked when they are in bud in June and July.

How to pick lentils
