The antihypertensive effect of Radix Lycii is related to the central nervous system, and may also block sympathetic nerve endings and directly relax blood vessels. During the period of hypotension, there is no obvious change in the electrocardiogram except for a slow heart rate and a decrease in T waves. Hypoglycemic effect: When rabbits were gavaged with decoction of Radix Lycii, their blood sugar level first increased for a short time, then decreased permanently, and did not recover after 4 to 8 hours. It had no obvious antagonistic effect on hyperglycemia caused by injection of adrenaline. Subcutaneous injection of extract in rabbits also reduced blood sugar. Another extract of the bearded wolfberry root can cause a significant and lasting decrease in blood sugar in rats, and increase carbohydrate tolerance. Antipyretic effect: Radix Lycii had a significant antipyretic effect on artificially fevered rabbits. Its ether extract and the water extract of the residue after ethanol extraction had no effect, while the ethanol extract, water extract or the water extract of the residue after ether extraction all had an effect.
