Tomato seed saving method steps

Tomato seed saving method steps

Tomatoes are a vegetable that everyone likes to eat, so how do you save tomatoes for seed?

Select the plant.

In the field, select typical plants with good growth, moderate inflorescence location, uniform plant height, and main traits that conform to the characteristics and properties of this variety.

Select ears of corn.

When the tomatoes on the 2nd or 3rd bunches of the selected plants are fully mature, pick them individually and choose the ones with large and neat shape, smooth surface, fresh color, small navel, no cracks on the pedicle and thick flesh for seeding. Place them indoors for 2-3 days to fully mature.

Dig out the seeds.

Clean the seed fruit, cut it in half in the middle, and then use a knife to dig the seeds and the glue into a non-metallic bucket. Do not add water to the seed solution to prevent the seeds from germinating during fermentation.

Fermentation.

After digging, cover the seed liquid basin. Place it indoors for 2-3 days to allow it to ferment naturally. When a white bacterial film appears on the surface of the seed liquid and the seeds and the jelly are easily separated, it means that the fermentation is complete.

Wash.

Add an equal amount of clean water to the fermented seed liquid, and then stir thoroughly. When you stop stirring, the seeds will sink quickly. Pour off the upper floating liquid, and then add clean water to the seed basin to rinse 2-3 times. If the jelly on the surface of the seeds is not easy to fall off, rub it off with your hands, then rinse it clean, and spread it on gauze to dry. Pay attention to turning it frequently to make the seeds dry evenly.

save.

When the moisture content of the seeds drops below 12% (there is a sound when bitten), they can be stored in paper bags or cloth bags. Hang a label on the seed bag, write down the variety, source, year and month of seed collection, quality, etc., and make a copy in the bag to prevent wrong use.
