Grain storage method

The grain storage method is to store threshed corn in a warehouse. This method has a high storage capacity utilization rate. If the warehouse is well sealed and the seeds are kept in a low temperature and dry condition, they can be stored for a long time without affecting their vitality. The key points of the grain storage method are: reduce the moisture content of seeds and dry them: strictly control the moisture content of seeds entering the warehouse, and strictly prevent the seeds from absorbing moisture after entering the warehouse. Under normal warehouse conditions, the moisture content of seeds cannot exceed 13%;

Low temperature and airtight storage: corn seeds with water content reduced to the safe standard should be stored in warehouses or ventilated in cold weather. After cooling, they should be piled up and covered with mats or sacks, and then covered with clean and insect-free soybean stalks, wheat bran, dry sand, cotton blankets, etc. for airtight storage. This can keep the seeds in a low temperature state for a long time and reduce the damage caused by insects and mildew.

Ventilated storage: Due to the drought and little rain in winter in the northern region, some places adopt open-air bulk storage, still using ventilation to reduce the moisture content of seeds, and then store them in warehouses after precipitation. However, care must be taken to prevent seeds from freezing.

Generally, it is appropriate to store corn ears in areas where the relative humidity is below 80%. Its advantages are: for newly harvested corn ears, the nutrients in the cob can continue to be transported to the kernels, so that the seeds can reach full maturity and continue to ripen on the ears; the porosity between ears is large, which is convenient for air circulation, and the moisture in the pile is easier to dissipate. High-moisture corn has difficulty drying, and after a winter of natural ventilation, the moisture can be reduced to a safe moisture level, and can be threshed in the spring of the second year and then stored in a closed manner; the kernels are tightly attached to the cob and have a tough pericarp, which can play a certain protective role. Except for a small number of kernels at the two ends of the ear that may become moldy or be eaten by insects, the vitality of the seeds in the middle is not affected, so this type of seeds is often used as sowing material in production.

When using this method, you can braid the stems and leaves of the corn ears and hang them in a ventilated and rain-proof place, or hang the corn around the tree trunk into a cone shape and cover the top of the cone with grass to avoid rain. You can also pile the corn ears with the husks removed in a simple warehouse made of sorghum stalks.
