Onion Storage and Nutritional Content

Although onion is a common food, it is very nutritious and is known as the queen of vegetables.

onion

Onion, also known as bulb onion, round onion, jade onion, shallot, belongs to the genus Allium of the Liliaceae family and is a perennial herb. It is native to western Asia and has a history of more than 5,000 years. In 1000 BC, onions were introduced to Egypt, then to the Mediterranean region, to the United States in the 16th century, to Japan in the 17th century, and to my country in the early 20th century.

Onions are cultivated in all parts of my country and are available all year round. The edible part of onions is the underground large bulb (i.e. onion head). According to the color of the skin, they can be divided into three types: white skin, yellow skin and red skin. The white skin type has a small bulb, white or slightly green in appearance, tender flesh, juicy and spicy, light leaves, good quality, and suitable for eating raw.

Onion is very nutritious and is known as the "Queen of Vegetables" in Europe. In addition to general nutrients, it also contains biologically active substances such as bactericidal, diuretic, lipid-lowering, anti-hypertensive, and anti-cancer.

effect

1. Onions are rich in nutrients and have a pungent smell. They can stimulate the secretion of the stomach, intestines and digestive glands, increase appetite and promote digestion. Onions do not contain fat, and their essential oils contain a mixture of sulfur compounds that can lower cholesterol. They can be used to treat indigestion, loss of appetite, and food stagnation.

2. Onion is the only food known to contain prostaglandin A. Prostaglandin A can dilate blood vessels and reduce blood viscosity. Regular consumption has a health-promoting effect on patients with hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

3. Onion has a certain refreshing effect. It can help cells better utilize glucose, while lowering blood sugar and supplying heat energy to brain cells. It is a good vegetable for patients with diabetes and mental depression.

4. The trace element selenium contained in onions is a strong antioxidant that can eliminate free radicals in the body, enhance cell vitality and metabolic capacity, and has the effect of preventing cancer and anti-aging;

5. Onions also contain a certain amount of calcium. In recent years, Swiss scientists have discovered that eating onions regularly can increase bone density and help prevent and treat osteoporosis.

6. Onions contain phytoncide such as allicin, which has strong bactericidal ability. Chewing raw onions can prevent colds.
