There are many types of cucumbers now, which can be roughly divided into spring cucumbers, trellis cucumbers and dry cucumbers. The most famous variety in the country is the Beijing thorny cucumber, which has a beautiful appearance, thin skin, thick flesh and less pulp.

Currently, there are South China cucumbers and North China cucumbers on the market. The main cultivated varieties are as follows:

Cucumber Types

1. Yuanfengyuan No. 6 Cucumber: Produced by Yuanfengyuan Vegetable Research Institute in Xia County, Shanxi Province, it is a first-generation hybrid, medium-early maturing, strong growth, fruiting on the main and side vines, high female flower rate, straight and smooth cucumber, dark green, shiny, 35 cm long, with white thorns, dense nodules, short handle, excellent quality, high yield, 5,000 kg per mu. Suitable for planting in spring, summer and autumn.

2. Zaoqing No. 2: A first-generation hybrid cucumber of the South China type bred by the Vegetable Research Institute of the Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences. It has strong growth potential, bears fruits on the main vine, and has many female flowers. The fruit is cylindrical, with dark green skin and a length of 21 cm. It is suitable for export to Hong Kong and Macao. It is resistant to low temperatures, wilt, blight and anthracnose, and resistant to downy mildew and powdery mildew. It takes 53 days from sowing to the first harvest. It is suitable for cultivation in spring and autumn.

3. Jinchun No. 4 cucumber: A North China type first generation cucumber hybrid bred by Tianjin Cucumber Research Institute. It is resistant to downy mildew, powdery mildew and wilt. It bears fruits on the main vine, matures early, grows at a medium speed, and has a long stick shape with a length of 35 cm. It is suitable for open field cultivation in spring and autumn.

4. Yuexiu No. 1: It is the latest first-generation hybrid cucumber of North China type bred by the Vegetable Research Institute of Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences. It bears fruits on the main vine, with a female plant rate of 65%. The fruits are stick-shaped, 33 cm long, early maturing, and resistant to low temperatures. It is relatively resistant to wilt, anthracnose, blight and downy mildew, and is suitable for open field cultivation in spring and autumn.

5. Zhongnong No. 8: A first-generation hybrid cucumber of North China type bred by the Vegetable and Flower Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. The plant has strong growth, many branches, and melons on the main and side vines. It is resistant to many diseases and insect pests such as downy mildew, powdery mildew, cucumber mosaic virus disease, wilt, anthracnose, etc. It is suitable for open field cultivation in spring and autumn.
