【Source】It is the rhizome of Cyperus rotundus, a plant of the Cyperaceae family. The plant morphology is described in the entry for "Cyperus rotundus".

[Collection] It can be collected in spring, summer and autumn. Generally, the rhizomes are dug in autumn, and the fibrous roots and scales are removed by burning. Then they are put into boiling water for a while, or steamed in a steamer, taken out and dried. Then they are put into a bamboo basket and rubbed back and forth; the ash and hairs are removed by a bamboo sieve, and the smooth cyperus is obtained. Some people do not burn the rhizomes, but put them into a sack and rub them before drying. Some people use a stone mill to remove the hairs, which is called cyperus rice.

【Medicinal Materials】Dried rhizomes are mostly spindle-shaped, sometimes slightly curved. 1.5-4.5 cm long, 5-10 mm in diameter. The surface is brown or dark brown, with longitudinal wrinkles and several raised segments. There are brown hairy scales and residual root marks on the nodes; if the hairs are removed, the surface is smooth and the segments are not obvious. The texture is hard. The cross section of the steamed ones is brownish yellow and slightly purple-red, showing keratin; the cross section of the raw sun-dried ones is white and powdery, with obvious stratification between the periphery and the center, and the center color is slightly darker. It has a fragrant smell and a slightly bitter taste. The ones with large size, brown color, solid texture and strong aroma are preferred.

It is mainly produced in Shandong, Zhejiang, Hunan and Henan. It is also produced in other regions. The one produced in Shandong is called Eastern Cyperus, and the one produced in Zhejiang is called Southern Cyperus, which are of better quality.

[Chemical composition] Contains 8.3-9.1% glucose, 1.0-1.7% fructose, 40-41.1% starch, and 0.65-1.4% volatile oil.

The volatile oil contains: pinene, camphene, 1,8-cineole, limonene, p-cymene, cyperene, pheltriene, pinene, α-cyperone, pinene, green leaf terpene ketone, α- and pinene, cyperol, isocyperol, epoxy cyperus, cyperol ketone, cyperus ketone, corbusone and isocobrusone.

The roots contain substances that inhibit the development of certain fungi.
