Nutritional and medicinal value of olives

Nutritional and medicinal value of olives

Olives are bitter and astringent fruits. Many people may not like to eat them at first bite, but after the bitterness comes the sweetness, just like our life, after the bitterness comes the sweetness. Let's learn about olives together.

Nutritional value of olives:

Biological introduction of olive:

Olive (Canavium album Raeuseh), also known as green fruit, green olive, white olive, is one of the subtropical evergreen fruit trees unique to the south, belonging to the Oleaceae family, Oleaceae genus. China is the country with the largest number of cultivated olives in the world, mainly distributed in Fujian and Guangdong (mostly black olives), followed by Guangxi and Taiwan, in addition to Sichuan, Yunnan, and southern Zhejiang. Olives taste sour or sweet when eaten fresh, sometimes with astringency, sweet aftertaste, and have a special aroma. They are deeply favored by people and are a treasure among fruits.

Nutritional value of olives:

Olives are rich in nutrients, containing 17 kinds of amino acids needed by the human body, and the flesh is rich in calcium and vitamin C. Every 100g of olive flesh contains 204mg of calcium and 6.55g of fat. Olive kernels contain 16.64% protein and 59.97% fat. Olive fruits have high nutritional value, especially rich in calcium and vitamin C, which are very beneficial for pregnant women and children. It is reported that foods made from olives or olive oil have the effect of protecting the heart and are nutritious and healthy foods suitable for all ages.

Medicinal Value of Olives:

Olives have good health benefits and are often used as a cooling and soothing agent. They are sweet, sour, astringent and flat in nature. Their main functions are detoxification and fluid production, lung clearing and throat relieving. They are often used to treat sore throat, thirst, coughing and vomiting blood, enteritis and dysentery, and to detoxify pufferfish and sober up.

Olive Oil and Infant and Child Health

Olives can also be made into olive oil, which is very useful, especially for babies:

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children need more fat (of course, it must be high-quality healthy fat): children under three years old need more fat intake to ensure that at least 40% of their energy consumption comes from fat. During breastfeeding, half of the baby's calories come from the fat in breast milk. After weaning, the required calories must be obtained through fat in the diet. Lazmeister extra virgin olive oil is the best food source for this essential fatty acid. Its ratio of linoleic acid to linolenic acid is infinitely close to that of human breast milk and is very easily absorbed by infants and young children.

Extra virgin olive oil can provide infants and young children with essential fatty acids, vitamins, and oleic acid needed to promote the development of infants' nerves and bones. When my son first started eating solid food, I tried to feed him bread slices dipped in extra virgin olive oil (we used the Greek brand Lazmes). He was immediately attracted by the delicious taste and began to love this food. Every time the bread was not served to him, his little mouth was already wide open waiting... Now, my son is almost two years old, but he still often holds a piece of bread in his hand and says to us in a vague voice: "Dip!" or "Oil~". From the time he first came into contact with olive oil, he firmly remembered the unique taste of olive oil and could easily distinguish it from other edible oils. He affectionately calls olive oil "sweet oil~"

After learning about the multiple health benefits of olive oil, I began to wonder if olive oil has other unique benefits for infants and young children. Through online searches, I found that extra virgin olive oil, especially organic extra virgin olive oil, has an unimaginable effect on baby skin care from a nutritional perspective.

1. Avoid diaper rash in babies

Young women who become mothers for the first time are likely to encounter a problem: no matter how often you change diapers for your baby, and no matter how diligently you try to keep your baby's bottom clean and dry, you will often see your baby's bottom sometimes turn red, and sometimes even have some small red bumps, which is commonly known as "diaper rash". Olive oil is the most effective little helper to prevent diaper rash. After each bath, apply a small amount of extra virgin olive oil to your baby's bottom groove and groin to effectively prevent the infiltration of moisture and other irritants. Of course, there are also professional ointments on the market to prevent diaper rash, but only olive oil is a pure natural medicine without any chemical ingredients, and no allergies or side effects.

2. Prevent baby's skin from drying out and cracking

In autumn and winter, when the weather is dry, babies or pregnant women may encounter skin cracking problems, such as cheeks, hands, and lips. It is not suitable for babies and pregnant women to use moisturizers or cosmetics with chemical ingredients. At this time, using olive oil to keep warm and moisturize is definitely the best choice. Olive oil is more easily absorbed than these so-called professional moisturizers. When bathing your baby, you can even drop a few drops of olive oil in the bath water, which can better prevent the baby's skin from drying out.

3. The role of massage oil

Massaging babies not only helps promote their physical growth and speed up their metabolism, but also gently massages them to soothe their emotions, reduce their fear after leaving the mother's body, make them fall asleep more easily, and reduce their crying.

Of course, you don’t have to use only olive oil when massaging your baby. I’m just suggesting that mothers should choose olive oil that has no toxic side effects when massaging their babies.

4. Prevention and treatment of constipation in infants and young children

Because the gastrointestinal function of infants and young children is not yet fully developed, they often react greatly to changes in food. A slight change in food can be seen in the color of the stool, and the accompanying change is often the occurrence of constipation in infants and young children. Many infants and young children who consume formula milk powder are very prone to constipation. At this time, giving infants and young children a moderate amount of olive oil can often effectively relieve the problem. You can also apply a little olive oil on the palm of your hand and gently and gently rub it on the infant's abdomen in a clockwise circle, which is also very helpful in relieving the degree of constipation in infants and young children. Of course, if the baby's constipation is very serious, it is best to seek help from a pediatrician.
