50% of urban high school students are myopic

Anyone who has been to the countryside knows that few children in rural areas wear glasses. However, the current myopia incidence rate among urban students in my country is alarmingly high. For example, according to statistics from the Ministry of Health, the myopia incidence rate among high school students in some large and medium-sized cities in coastal provinces and cities is as high as 50%.

Why is the myopia rate in rural areas much lower than that in urban areas? Some people in the medical field used to believe that because rural areas have a wider field of vision than urban areas, rural students often look far away, so their vision is naturally better than that of urban students. But this statement is unconvincing.

Urban children have low lutein intake

In recent years, Western nutritionists have finally solved this mystery after in-depth research. It turns out that the occurrence of myopia is closely related to the insufficient intake of a nutrient called "lutein".

Lutein is a carotenoid, which is found in high concentrations in fresh green vegetables and citrus fruits. According to scientists, lutein plays an important protective role in the retina's "macular degeneration". A lack of lutein can easily lead to macular degeneration and blurred vision.

Eat more citrus fruits to prevent vision degeneration

Rural children eat green vegetables picked directly from the fields every day, so their lutein intake is sufficient. Urban children usually eat high-protein, high-nutrition food and rarely eat fresh green vegetables, so their lutein intake is much less than that of rural children. This is the main reason for the huge difference in vision between urban and rural children.

In view of this, nutritionists recommend eating more citrus fruits every day to prevent vision deterioration.
