Constipation is a very common digestive system problem among modern people, especially among the elderly. According to clinical statistics, among the elderly over 60 years old in my country, as many as 20% have less than 3 bowel movements per week and it is very difficult, and the number of women is 4 times that of men. As we all know, one of the important causes of constipation is that there are too few food residues and water in the stool. In order to solve this problem, many people know that they should eat more fruits. Fruits are rich in dietary fiber. Although this kind of substance cannot be digested and absorbed by the human body, it can absorb and retain water, make the stool soft, and stimulate the secretion of digestive juices and intestinal peristalsis, which is beneficial to the excretion of stool and can play a role in preventing and treating constipation. However, when eating fruits to treat constipation, you should pay attention to the following aspects:

Tailored to the individual

According to the "constitution theory" of traditional Chinese medicine, people's constitutions are divided into three types: cold, hot, and neutral. People with cold constitutions are afraid of cold, their hands and feet are often cold, and their tongue coating is white and slippery. People with hot constitutions often feel dry mouth, upset, hot hands and feet, yellow tongue coating, and irritability. Neutral constitutions have no cold or hot bias. Different constitutions should eat fruits with opposite characteristics. People with hot constitutions should eat cold fruits, such as watermelon, melon, papaya, pear, grapefruit, orange, banana, mulberry, water chestnut, kiwi, etc.; people with cold constitutions should eat hot fruits, such as cherries, tangerines, dates, etc.; people with neutral constitutions have a wider range of choices when eating fruits, but the most suitable ones for them are pineapples, sugar canes, etc.; in addition, the elderly and weak should eat less fruits, otherwise they are prone to abdominal pain or diarrhea and other discomforts.

Treat the disease according to its severity

Constipated patients with other diseases should carefully select fruits according to their condition before eating them. For example, diabetic patients should not eat fruits with high sugar content, such as longan, lychee, banana, melon, etc. Patients with heart disease and severe edema should eat less fruits, otherwise it will increase the burden on the heart and aggravate edema, so they must pay attention to the right amount. People with chronic nephritis, hypertension, and edema should not eat too many fruits with cold nature and high sodium content, such as bananas.

Cause and effect

Not all fruits can treat constipation. Fruits such as hawthorn and black plum contain more tannic acid, which has a convergent effect and will aggravate the symptoms of constipation.

In addition, for people with severe constipation, do not rely solely on eating fruits to relieve the symptoms. You should go to the hospital for a check-up to find out whether you have other diseases, such as an elongated colon, pelvic tumor compression, and colon cancer, so that you can receive early treatment.
