Medicinal value of loquat

Loquat is a plant of the Rosaceae family. Its fruit, pits and young leaves are all used for medicinal purposes.

Food taste

Fruit: sweet, sour, neutral, non-toxic; Leaves: bitter, neutral.

Gourmet ingredients

The pulp contains sugars, tartaric acid, malic acid, citric acid, tannin, carotene, vitamins A, B, and C. The kernel contains amygdalin and fatty oil. The leaves contain amygdalin and vitamin B1.

Pharmacological effects

It benefits the lungs and stops vomiting. Loquat pulp: cools, promotes the production of body fluids, and quenches thirst. Loquat leaves (brush off the hairs on the back of the leaves) and kernels are effective expectorants and antitussives.

Lung heat cough, cough, vomiting:

Wash 30 grams of fresh loquat leaves, 15 grams of bamboo shavings, 6 grams of tangerine peel, decoct in water, and add honey to taste.

Acute or chronic bronchitis:

For cough and asthma, take 30 grams of fresh leaves, 12 grams each of ophiopogon japonicus and 12 grams of tangerine peel, and 6 grams of orange peel, and decoct them in water.

Cough and sputum:

12-15g of loquat kernels, 6g each of licorice and orange peel, decocted in water, taken twice a day divided into monthly doses.

Feeling hot, thirsty, and hiccups in summer:

Take 12 grams each of fresh loquat leaves, fresh bamboo leaves and fresh reed roots, boil them into a soup and drink it as cold tea.

Summer prickly heat, heat boils, facial acne, etc.:

Boil loquat leaves in water and use it to wash the affected area 2 to 3 times a day.

Gangrene, malignant sore, mass, tumor:

Cut the loquat leaves into small pieces, wrap them in wet coarse paper, simmer them over an ash fire, put them into a cloth bag, and apply warm compress to the affected area while it is still hot. Replace the cloth when it becomes cold, 2-3 times a day. (According to literature reports, some patients with cervical cancer were cured by applying warm compress in this way.)

Breast pain during weaning:

5 pieces of loquat leaves and 9 grams of Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae are decocted in water and taken orally. (It is reported that this method of weaning does not affect the secretion of milk during future childbirth.)

To prevent influenza:

Boil 15 grams of loquat leaves in water and take it for 3 consecutive days.

Fever and cough after measles:

Take 15 grams each of loquat leaves, mulberry root bark, and gypsum, decoct in water and remove the residue, add appropriate amount of rock sugar, and take it 2 to 3 times a day.

Note: Loquat kernels are poisonous and, like almonds, should not be eaten raw.
