Types of Hawthorn Fruit

Hawthorn can be divided into two types according to its taste: sweet and sour, among which sour hawthorn is the most popular.

Sweet hawthorn is pink in appearance, small in size, smooth in surface, and slightly sweet in taste.

Sour hawthorn is divided into several varieties, including crooked red, big golden star, big cotton ball and ordinary hawthorn (the earliest hawthorn variety).

As the name suggests, the fruit stalk of Waibahong is slightly raised, which makes it look like the fruit stalk is crooked, hence the name. The single fruit of Waibahong hawthorn is larger than that of normal hawthorn, and it is mainly used as the raw material for the candied haws on the market.

Big Golden Star, the fruit is slightly larger than Waibahong, and there are small dots on the ripe fruit, hence the name Big Golden Star. It has the heaviest taste and is particularly sour. Big Cotton Ball or Red Cotton Ball, the fruit is the largest, and is soft and fluffy when ripe, with moderate acidity. It is basically not processed when eaten, and has a short shelf life.

Common hawthorn, the earliest variety of hawthorn, is small in size and has hard flesh, making it suitable for use as medicine. It is the main raw material for canned hawthorn on the market.

In recent years, a new variety has appeared in Shandong: the big five-ridged apple. The fruit is huge, with a single fruit weighing up to 31.6 grams. The fruit is oblong, with a relatively swollen calyx and obvious five-ridged protrusions around the calyx pit, just like a red star apple. The skin is bright red and shiny, with small and sparse fruit spots, and the flesh is yellow-white, tender, sweet and slightly sour, not bitter or astringent, and delicious. It can be eaten as a fruit.

Hawthorn is a unique tree species for both medicine and fruit in my country. There are many varieties of hawthorn, and both fresh and processed fruits are popular in the market. Hawthorn can be cultivated in mountains, plains, hills, sandy wastelands, acidic or alkaline soils. Sandy soil is the best soil condition, and heavy clay soil will grow poorly. It can be propagated by seeds, division, cuttings, and grafting.

Seed propagation: mature seeds must be stored in sand. Dig a 50-100 cm deep trench, mix the seeds with 3-5 times wet sand and put them into the trench until they are 10 cm away from the edge of the trench, then cover the sand to the ground, and cover the soil to 30-50 cm before freezing. Turn the seeds over in June or July of the second year, take them out and sow them in autumn, or sow them in the spring of the third year. The row spacing of the row sowing is 20 cm, the trench is 4 cm deep and 3-5 cm wide, and 200-300 seeds are sown per meter. After sowing, cover with thin soil and then cover with 1 cm thick sand to prevent soil compaction and water evaporation. The sowing amount is 375-450 kg per 1hm2.

Division propagation: dig out the root suckers and plant them in the nursery for grafting. Cutting propagation: in spring, cut the 0.5-1 cm thick roots into 12-14 cm root segments, tie them into bundles, and flood them with 0.3×10-6-0.5×10-6 "920" by mass fraction, then place them in wet sand for 6-7 days, insert them obliquely in the nursery, irrigate with small amounts of water to make the roots and soil close together, and they will sprout around 15 days. When the seedlings are 50-60 cm tall, they can be budded in early August.

Grafting propagation: It can be carried out in spring, summer and autumn. Seedlings or division seedlings propagated by seeds can be used as rootstocks. Bud grafting or branch grafting is used, with bud grafting as the main method. Seedlings are planted when they are 10 cm tall, and the spacing between transplanted rows is 50-60 cm × 10-15 cm. Combined with plowing in autumn, organic fertilizers can be applied. From flowering to fruiting period, inorganic fertilizers can be sprayed on the leaves. Regular shaping and pruning, plowing and weeding, root suckers are removed, and soil is added. In view of the problem of low and unstable yield in hawthorn production in recent years, the high-yield cultivation techniques of hawthorn are summarized as follows.
