Dietary taboos for hemodialysis patients

Dietary taboos for hemodialysis patients

Hemodialysis is a means of treating late-stage uremia. It can prolong the life of patients with uremia. However, when using hemodialysis treatment, patients should also pay more attention to their diet. There are many dietary taboos during this period. If you are not careful, it will make the condition worse. So what are the dietary taboos for hemodialysis patients? The following editor will tell you in detail.

Dietary taboos for hemodialysis patients

1. Hemodialysis patients should control their fluid intake

Hemodialysis patients should strictly control their water intake. The amount of water they drink should be about 500 ml more than the urine volume of the previous day. In addition, the temperature of the water should be controlled. Warm water should not be drunk. It is best to drink ice water or hot water. When drinking, large quantities should not be drunk continuously. A mouthful of water should be held in the mouth and swallowed all at once.

2. Hemodialysis patients should limit their sodium intake

If the urine volume of hemodialysis patients is normal, there is no need to restrict sodium intake. However, if their urine volume decreases, they should reduce their sodium intake. The amount of sodium absorbed per day should not exceed five grams. The daily sodium intake of anuric patients should not exceed two grams.

3. Hemodialysis patients should limit potassium intake

During the treatment period, hemodialysis patients should not consume too much potassium, and the daily intake should not exceed 2.5 grams. They should eat less high-potassium foods. Ingredients such as seaweed, mushrooms, cabbage, and bananas are things that hemodialysis patients should stay away from. If the potassium intake cannot be controlled, patients will develop hyperkalemia, which can be life-threatening.
