Lentil planting techniques and field management

Lentil planting techniques and field management

After we planted the lentils, it is not that there is nothing else to do, so how can we better manage them next?

1. Planting at the right time.

In order to get lentils on the market early, timely planting is required, with a planting density of 1.6m in row and 0.5-0.8m in plant. For lentils planted in mid-February, a 10m wide double-layer greenhouse with a small arch shed for three layers of covering and insulation is used. If the temperature is low, straw mats are used to cover the small arch shed for insulation at night. For lentils transplanted and planted in mid-March, a 4m wide middle shed with a small arch shed for covering and insulation is used.

After the lentils are planted, the temperature in the small greenhouse should be maintained at 20-30℃, but not more than 35℃.

2. Pruning and pinching.

When the lentil vines grow to 40-50cm after transplanting, a "human" frame should be set up in time to guide the vines up the frame, and the frame height should be controlled at about 1.5m. For lentils cultivated with multi-layer covering, because they are sown early, have a long growth period, and the branches and leaves are prone to excessive growth, they should be topped and pinched in time to promote inflorescence development, early flowering, early pod formation, and early market launch. Timely pruning during the peak pod formation period is an important technical measure to extend the harvest period.

The method is to timely pinch the vines when they grow to 100-120cm after planting, so as to promote the growth of more lateral buds, more flowers and more pods. When the pods are in full bloom, cut off the old branches and leaves and the side branches with few pods, improve the ventilation and light conditions in the field, especially in the hot season, and insist on pruning and pinching to control the excessive growth of plants, prolong the pod-setting time, and increase the yield per unit area and output efficiency.

3. Remove the film and regulate moisture.

In spring, the film of lentils under multi-layer mulch cultivation should be removed in time. In the plain area of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, the small shed should be removed when the temperature rises in late March to early April; the middle shed or double-layer shed film should be removed when the first batch of lentils are harvested in early and mid-May. Since water has a great influence on the growth and development of lentils, insufficient water supply in the seedling stage will slow down their growth, and early seedlings will not meet the requirements of early germination; insufficient water supply during the flowering and pod-setting period will affect flowering and pod-setting, thus affecting yield and quality.

Therefore, when the soil moisture is poor and the leaves of the plants wilt at noon, attention should be paid to replenishing water to ensure the normal growth and development of lentils and improve the yield and quality. After the shed is removed, lentils enter the open-field growth period. At this time, the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River enter the plum rain season, and the rain is more concentrated. At this time, a set of (horizontal, vertical, and surrounding) ditches should be opened in the field to prevent the harm of open waterlogging and hidden waterlogging.
