Perilla Introduction

Perilla leaves are small soft branches with leaves of Perilla and Perilla frutescens of the Lamiaceae family. Perilla is an annual herb. It is harvested from July to August in the south and from August to September in the north when the branches and leaves are lush. Spread them on the ground or hang them in a ventilated and shady place, and pick off the leaves after they are dry.

1. The leaves of Perilla are mostly wrinkled and curled. The intact ones are oval when flattened, 4 to 11 cm long and 2.5 to 9 cm wide, with long or acute tips, rounded or broadly wedge-shaped bases, serrated edges, purple on both sides or green on the upper side, with many concave glandular scales on the lower surface, and petioles 2 to 5 cm long, purple or purple-green, and crisp. The young branches are purple-green, with pith in the middle of the cross section, and have a fresh fragrance and a slightly spicy taste.

2. The leaves of wild perilla are mostly wrinkled. When the intact leaves are flattened, they are oval, 4 to 7 cm long and 2.5 to 5 cm wide. Both sides of the leaves are green, dark green or purple, and the edges are rounded and serrated.

The best ones are those with complete leaves, purple color and strong fragrance.

Nutritional value of perilla

Perilla is commonly used as a traditional Chinese medicine in China, while Japanese people mostly use it in cooking, especially when eating sashimi, it is an indispensable accompaniment. In a few areas of my country, it is also used as a vegetable or tea. Perilla leaves are also called perilla leaves. They have the functions of dispelling cold, promoting qi and harmonizing the stomach. They are mainly used to treat colds, coughs, chest and abdominal distension, nausea and vomiting. The seeds are also called perilla seeds, which have the functions of relieving cough and asthma, and removing phlegm. The whole perilla plant can be used to distill perilla oil, and the oil from the seeds is also called perilla oil. Long-term consumption of perilla oil has obvious effects on the treatment of coronary heart disease and hyperlipidemia.

It has the functions of dispelling cold and relieving exterior symptoms, promoting lung function and relieving cough, regulating qi and harmonizing the middle, stabilizing pregnancy and detoxifying.

It is mainly used to treat exogenous wind-cold, aversion to cold and fever, headache without sweating, cough and asthma, abdominal distension, vomiting, nausea and diarrhea, pharyngeal obstruction, nausea during pregnancy, fetal movement disorder, fish and crab poisoning, carbuncle, snake venom and spicy food.

Perilla is suitable for people

Patients with Qi deficiency, Yin deficiency and febrile diseases should take it with caution.
