Many people like to eat radish in winter. As the saying goes, "Eat radish in winter and ginger in summer, and you won't need a doctor to prescribe medicine." Many people like to eat it raw because spicy radish contains mustard oil, an anti-cancer substance. Experts say that mustard oil and glycosides in white radish can react with a variety of enzymes to form anti-cancer components, but you should not eat too much spicy radish, otherwise you will easily get mustard oil poisoning.

Precautions for eating radish

Wang Yuedan, a doctor from the Department of Immunology at Peking University, said that although mustard oil can fight cancer, its negative effects on human health after excessive intake cannot be ignored. Wang Yuedan pointed out that in fact, mustard oil is a toxin commonly contained in cruciferous plants such as radish, cabbage and rapeseed. If the human body consumes too much, it may cause symptoms such as goiter, metabolic disorders, poisoning, and even death. Long-term consumption of plants containing a lot of mustard oil, such as rapeseed, can cause hemolytic anemia in sheep, also known as cabbage anemia, or red water disease; and cause thyroid dysfunction and even growth stagnation in pigs, cattle and chickens.

At the same time, experts said that mustard oil is volatile when exposed to high temperatures, so plants containing mustard oil will no longer be spicy after being cooked, and there is no need to worry about possible poisoning caused by mustard oil.

Experts warn

Any food with health-care function, although its effect is good, should not be eaten too much. For anti-cancer foods such as spicy radish, we should also be moderate to avoid poisoning.
