Born in 1973, Ji Duoqi is a talented and creative young artist. In the Vegetable Museum series, she reshapes the masterpieces of Western masters in unexpected ways. Common vegetables and grains on the Chinese table, such as tofu, cabbage, ginger, lotus root, pepper, sweet potato, corn, etc., are mixed and arranged together - Ji Duoqi gives these ingredients new life, and the vegetables subvert their previous ordinary, cheap, inconspicuous and perishable images, and become classic works that attract worldwide attention.

A little girl with imagination

Laughing out loud at a pickled cucumber may sound a little silly, but it looks really funny. The short pickled cucumber is lowering its head, hunching its back, holding its arms close to its sides, and tying a thin piece of seaweed around its chest. A seaweed hat blocks its face, making it hard to see its expression. Perhaps because it is lowering its head, it looks a little pitiful.

"Little Pickled Cucumber" stood at the end of the team, and in front of it there were a dozen "pickled cucumber men", "ginger men" and "carrot men" who were much bigger than it. They all walked with difficulty on a golden beach paved with corn, using the thin seaweed tied tightly around their bodies to pull a pumpkin boat with a tender cucumber mast slowly forward. They were a group of "trackers on the Volga River".

Then there is "The Death of Cabbage Head". "Cabby Head" is sitting in the bathtub with a bean curd skin wrapped around its head, and an angry and painful expression on its face. Its two garlic eyes are tightly closed, and one sweet potato arm hangs down weakly from the white bean curd skin bath towel. The green bean fingers of its left hand are still tightly holding a note, which reads: "The great achievements of the living are the glory of the dead. Dear little potato, goodbye! Dear little sweet potato, goodbye! Dear little cabbage, goodbye!"

Almost everyone who accidentally walks into the Paris-Beijing Photography Space and the "Vegetable Museum" exhibition in Beijing will laugh out loud. Of course, there are exceptions, and some people still follow the convention of viewing art works and look serious and thoughtful. The author of this series of "world famous paintings", Ju Duoqi, is walking through the yard, dressed in a bright "Angel Emily" style.

Such a strange name like Ju Duoqi is of course not her real name. She has always liked orange and has a natural liking for orange peels. In addition, she also wanted a name that people can remember. After graduating from the Industrial Design Department of Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts, she worked as a designer in online game and mobile game companies. Because her designs were too personal and too girly, she was considered to have no future. She is not good at painting and does not like it very much, but she is good at imagination, associating one image with another, and replacing and deforming similar things to make them related.

Vegetables are also shocking

“Vegetables are too cheap and too easy to obtain. But they are also very fragile. They are still fresh in the morning, but wilt in the afternoon and rot in two days.” In a studio with only one person, Ji Duoqi can piece together large scenes using only a kitchen knife, a box of toothpicks and a few vegetables.

In July 1830, a group of people immersed in revolutionary fervor walked towards the streets of Paris. Delacroix's "Liberty Leading the People" depicts the violent street scenes of the French "July Revolution" and is also the first subject of pranks in Juduoqi's "Vegetable Series". In the original work, a Statue of Liberty holding a modern rifle appears in the fortifications in the city center. She is huge and majestic, with no gentleness on her face.

This time, when "freedom" leads "vegetables", the goddess with her winter melon-like breasts and breasts smelling of onions grabs a green onion gun in her left hand, holds up the fluttering tomato and fungus tricolor flags in her right hand, and wears a tofu skin skirt, calling on the vegetable people to move forward. The excited boy who looked like a street kid on the left side of the goddess is now a sweet potato soldier, staring with small round eyes, and the musket in his right hand has turned into a drooping rape leaf.

One day, Ju Duoqi collected a bag of garlic peels in the market, which were thrown away by the vegetable vendors after peeling them. This pile of garlic peels later became the background of "Eggplant's Birthday", in which "Eggplant" Chagall flew into the air and kissed his Bella on his birthday.

For about a whole year, one of the contents of Ji Duoqi's life was to go to the vegetable market every day like a housewife. She lived in the northeast of the city, near the ring railway, and took a two-stop bus to a large farmer's market that was similar to the urban-rural junction. She wandered in front of each stall, picked up and looked at it, pondered and put it down, and imagined where to move it to the most suitable position. She took the fresh vegetables home, rinsed them under clean water, cut them into shapes, and fixed them into various shapes with toothpicks. At this time, she needed to seize the time, because the heating would make the pea leaves wilt, and the cut cucumbers would quickly lose their luster. Then, she adjusted the focus, tested the brightness of the flash, and started shooting. Fresh, wilted, dried, pickled, boiled, fried, the vegetables all looked different, and the small pictures were pieced together on the computer. Generally, the original files of each "famous painting" had more than 100 layers.

The fun of parody

There are wars, love, and violence. After the little girl's mischievous thoughts, what is more or less surprising is Ji Duoqi's imagination and ability to replace. Among the 20 works in the "Vegetable Series", some are simple and easy to stylize, such as potato heads, sweet potato arms, or bodies related to carrots and lotus roots. There are also unexpected places, such as the face of a woman transformed from the saying "eating women's tofu", "Leek Van Gogh" - chopped leeks and pickles are used to imitate the special Van Gogh style in the painter's "Self-Portrait" in 1887. Van Gogh's eyes are made of two peas of different shapes, one is square and the other is round, which instead raises that extremely paranoid look.

If the success of an artwork can be measured by the number of times it is reproduced, then "The Kiss" by Austrian painter Gustav Klimt can probably be considered one of the most successful works of Western art. Klimt used a lot of gold leaf in the painting. The entire background was originally covered with gold leaf, and then a very thin layer of paint was applied to create a dark and blurred effect.

Even without the expensive gold foil, "The Kiss of the Beautiful Heart: Radish" is still a colorful work. The diced potatoes and carrots form a void background, and the fresh celery leaves, radish strips and potato cubes in the shape of petals can also become a swaying sea of ​​flowers. The man's robe is green corn, and the woman's dress is yellow corn, forming a subtle color difference.

When Ju Duoqi saw "Napoleon on Potatoes" while standing in the exhibition hall, she suddenly became happy. She said that she recalled that at around 2 o'clock one night this summer, she cut up the radish head of "Napoleon" and fried it and ate it.
