It is made by grinding fresh Artemisia annua, fresh Xanthium sibiricum, fresh Polygonum odoratum, red beans and almonds, mixing them with wheat bran and flour, and fermenting them. It is the most commonly used finished medicine in traditional Chinese medicine to harmonize the spleen and stomach and help digestion. In terms of modern pharmacology, Shenqu is a yeast preparation containing amylase, yeast, volatile oil, B vitamins, etc. It promotes digestion through its ingredients and fermentation. It is often used to treat food stagnation, chest and abdominal distension, loss of appetite, etc.

The use of Shenqu in porridge can be seen in the Yuan and Ming dynasties. For example, in the book Duoneng Bi Shi written by Liu Ji (also known as Liu Bowen) in the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties, there is a recipe for "Qu Mo Congee" for treating food boils. Shenqu and polished rice are used to cook porridge together, "to treat indigestion in the elderly due to spleen deficiency".
