For example, in the book Duoneng Bi Shi written by Liu Ji (also known as Liu Bowen) in the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties, there is a recipe for "Qu Mo Congee" for treating food boils. Shenqu and polished rice are used to cook porridge together, "to treat indigestion in the elderly due to spleen deficiency". Hawthorn is added to this recipe to increase its ability to digest food and resolve accumulation. For patients who are affected by the turbid qi of summer heat and dampness, and have food stagnation, symptoms include dizziness, chest tightness, nausea and vomiting, loose stools, and loss of appetite, it can be used with patchouli, perilla, atractylodes, and magnolia bark to eliminate dampness and digest food; if there is damp heat in the intestines and stagnation, symptoms include abdominal pain, urgency, and red and white diarrhea, it can be used with rhubarb, coptis root, betel nut, and charred hawthorn to eliminate heat, remove stagnation, and digest food. In addition, this product can promote the digestion and absorption of mineral drugs, and can be used with mineral drugs such as magnetite and cinnabar. This product can also stop milk production and can be taken alone.
