In 632-642 AD, Xuanzang, a famous monk in the Tang Dynasty, went to India to seek Buddhist scriptures and brought back mango seeds, which were then planted in Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi, Fujian, Taiwan, Yunnan and other places.

There are more than 1,000 varieties of mango. In terms of production, mango is the fifth largest fruit in the world after grapes, oranges, bananas and apples. India produces about 9 million tons of mangoes annually, accounting for about 65% of the world's total production.

Ripe mangoes are extraordinarily sweet. Unfortunately, mangoes cannot withstand long-term storage and are difficult to transport. People far from the production areas can hardly eat fresh ripe mangoes. With the development of science, scientists have developed a storage technology that uses chemical drugs to treat mangoes, which can keep them fresh for 1-2 months. In recent years, fresh mangoes from Lingnan, my country have been exported to many countries including Eastern Europe, Japan, and the United States.

There are more than 200 varieties of mangoes in Guangdong alone, and there are even more varieties abroad. The more common varieties are the most famous Luzon Mango, India 901, Machel, Ivory Mango, Egg Mango, Green Mango, Red Flower Mango, Retaining Fragrance Mango, and Autumn Mango. Luzon Mango is a giant in the mango family. It has thick branches and green leaves, bright fruit fragrance, and excellent quality. In the past few years, winter mango trees were discovered in Jingxi and Debao, Guangxi. Most of them grow on mountain peaks or between the stone walls of cliffs. They bloom twice a year and bear fruit twice. Experts say that this winter mango is a rare and precious mango variety with great research value and development prospects.

Mango cultivation

Mangoes are propagated by seeds or cuttings. Young trees begin to bear fruit in the fourth year of growth, and the 8th to 14th year is the peak period. The trunk is usually up to 20 meters high and the age can be more than 100 years. Each tree can produce more than 1,000 fruits a year. The commercial value of picking can last for more than 30 years. The small fruit is 4 cm long and 3 cm wide, like a plum; the large one is 30 cm long and 15 cm wide, and weighs up to 2 kg. A farm in Yongde, Yunnan, my country has more than 10 mango trees that are more than 400 years old, and they are still blooming and bearing fruit. This proves that mangoes have a long growth period and solid texture, making them good materials for car and shipbuilding. In addition, the tree has a beautiful shape and good shade, making it an excellent tree species for campus and road greening.

Mangoes come in different shapes and colors. They are rich in nutrients, easy to digest, and the flesh is rich in vitamins. It contains 11%-12% sugar. Eating mangoes regularly can make the human body strong. Mangoes also have high medicinal value. "Food Nature Materia Medica" says that it "treats women's meridian blockage and men's blood circulation in the Yingwei". "Compendium of Materia Medica" also states: "It benefits the stomach and stops vomiting and dizziness." Mangoes can be used to treat toothache, scurvy and colds; it can purify the blood; it has a good effect on bronchitis and gastric acid; it can prevent constipation. It can reduce phlegm and prevent bacterial infections in the respiratory tract. It can also treat hoarseness and help reduce fever, and relieve pain caused by injuries.

The role of mango

You can make tea from mango leaves to treat diseases. To do this, put a handful of leaves in water, boil the water, and filter the tea after boiling for a few minutes. Mango tea can be used to treat pain caused by injuries. Soak a towel in the tea first, then apply the towel to the painful area for a few minutes every day. If you have oral diseases and sore throats, you can rinse your mouth with this tea for a few minutes each time. If you have bronchial diseases, you can drink mango leaf tea, half a cup each time.

You can also make tea with mango pits to kill intestinal parasites. To make this tea, place a pit in a cup and a half of water and boil for 20 minutes. Drink 3 spoons of warm tea every day before breakfast. The pit and peel of mango are both edible. In addition to eating fresh, mango can be processed into juice, jam, wine, candied fruit and canned food.
