How to choose watermelon and its nutritional value

Today I will tell you how to choose watermelon and its nutritional value. It is very useful. When you buy watermelon, you don’t have to worry about buying unripe watermelon:

How to choose watermelon

When buying watermelons, many people are concerned about whether the watermelon is a "hormone" watermelon. Here I will tell you to use the three-step method of "first look, second smell, third taste" to identify it.

First, look at the appearance. Take watermelons as an example. Watermelons sprayed with hormones are prone to deformity, such as asymmetry at both ends and depression in the middle. The vines are thick and the navels are large. Normally mature watermelons have neat shapes, old vines and small navels. If they are cut, the most typical point is that although the flesh of watermelons that have been treated with growth enhancers is red, the seeds are always white. In addition, you can also compare the sizes. If they are of the same variety, if the sizes are very different, you should be vigilant.

Secondly, you need to smell it. Most naturally ripened fruits have a fruity aroma on the skin; artificially ripened fruits not only have no fruity aroma, but even have a strange smell.

Finally, you can tell by tasting it. If it has no sweetness, is rough, or tastes slightly sour, it may be caused by hormones.

Nutritional value of watermelon

Watermelon is cold in nature, sweet in taste, and enters the heart, stomach, and bladder meridians; it has the effects of clearing away heat and relieving summer heat, promoting fluid production and quenching thirst, and promoting diuresis and relieving restlessness; it is mainly used to treat chest and diaphragm qi stagnation, fullness and discomfort, difficulty urinating, sores in the mouth and nose, summer heat, heatstroke, and detoxification of alcohol.

Dietary taboos

Watermelon is edible for the general population and is suitable for patients with hypertension, acute and chronic nephritis, cholecystitis, and those with persistent high fever.

The following people should not eat:

1. Pregnant women

The physique of a postpartum woman is relatively weak. From a medical point of view, watermelon is cold in nature, so eating too much will lead to excessive cold and damage the spleen and stomach.

2. Patients with renal insufficiency

If patients with kidney problems eat too much watermelon, they will consume too much water and cannot excrete it in time, which will cause excessive water storage in the body and increase blood volume, which can easily induce acute heart failure.

3. Diabetes patients

Eating watermelon can lead to an increase in blood sugar. In severe cases, metabolic disorders may occur, leading to acidosis and endangering life.

4. Patients with oral ulcers

Oral ulcers are believed to be caused by Yin deficiency, internal heat, and internal fire disturbance in traditional Chinese medicine. Eating watermelon causes excessive excretion of water needed for the recovery of oral ulcers, thereby aggravating Yin deficiency and internal heat, and prolonging the healing time of patients.
