Ramie root

Ramie root, also known as ramie root, ramie head, ramie, Sichuan onion, silver ramie, Tianmingjing, garden hemp, line hemp, mountain hemp, etc., is a perennial herb. Ramie root is the root of ramie of Urticaceae, which has the effects of clearing heat, stopping bleeding, detoxifying, and dispersing blood stasis. It is effective for erysipelas, carbuncle, bruises, snake and insect bites, etc. It grows wild on hillsides, ravines, roadsides, etc.

Morphological characteristics

Ramie root is a perennial herb, up to 2 meters high. The stem is erect, branched, and pubescent. The leaves are alternate, broadly ovate or ovate, 7-15 cm long and 6-14 cm wide, with acuminate tips and coarse serrations on the edges. The base is rounded or broadly cuneate, green and rough above, and densely covered with white wool below except for the veins; the stipules are cone-shaped and fall off; the petioles are pubescent. The flowers are unisexual, monoecious, and the flowers are small and bunched in axillary panicles; the male flowers are yellow-white, with 4 perianths and 4 stamens; the female flowers are light green, with 4 perianths, tightly embracing the ovary, and 1 style. The achenes are small, elliptical, gathered into small balls, with hairs on them, and the style is prominent. The flowering period is May to June. The fruit ripening period is September to October.

The efficacy and function of ramie root

It is used to treat fever, severe thirst, madness, hematuria, urinary retention, hematemesis, bleeding, leucorrhea, erysipelas, carbuncle, bruises, and snake and insect bites.

① "Bie Lu": It is used to treat red dan in children; soaking in ramie juice can cure thirst and stabilize the fetus.

② "Bencao Gangmu": Treats heat in the heart and diaphragm, miscarriage and bleeding, restlessness before and after delivery, epidemic heat disease, extreme thirst and madness, poisonous arrows, snake and insect bites.

③ "Compendium of Materia Medica": It is mainly used for Baidan, boil it into a thick paste and use it for bathing, three to four times a day.

⑨ "Nanning City Pharmacopoeia": Treats measles in children, bleeding, swelling and pain caused by trauma.
