Viola yedoensis

Viola philippica, also known as wild violet, light-petal violet, etc., is a perennial herb belonging to the order Paramecia, Violaceae, with no above-ground stems, 4-14 cm high, with triangular ovate or narrow ovate leaves at the bottom, and longer leaves at the top, oblong, narrow ovate-lanceolate or oblong-ovate, medium-sized flowers, purple or lavender, rarely white, with lighter throat color and purple stripes; capsule oblong, 5-12 mm long, seeds ovoid, 1.8 mm long, light yellow. Flowering and fruiting period is from mid-to-late April to September.

It tastes bitter, pungent and cold. It enters the heart and lung meridians. It has the effects of clearing away heat and detoxifying, cooling blood and relieving swelling, clearing heat and removing dampness. It is mainly used to treat furuncle, carbuncle, scrofula, jaundice, dysentery, diarrhea, red eyes, throat paralysis, and snake bites.

The efficacy and function of Viola yedoensis

1. Viola yedoensis for snake bites: Viola yedoensis can also dissolve snake venom and treat snake bites. Fresh products can be mashed into juice for oral administration, or mixed with a little realgar and mashed for external application. In addition, it can also be used for liver heat, red eyes, and tumors. It is often used with chrysanthemums, cicada shells, etc.

2. Viola yedoensis combined with dandelion: Both can clear away heat, detoxify and reduce swelling. Every 1g of dry Viola yedoensis contains 354.8μg of iron, 30.3μg of manganese, 22.2μg of copper, 55.8μg of zinc, 11.3μg of barium, 87.3μg of strontium, 69.0μg of chromium, 60.0μg of molybdenum, 9.7μg of cobalt and 3.9μg of calcium. Pick the seedlings or tender stems of Viola yedoensis, blanch them in boiling water, and soak them in clean water for 3~5min before frying, making soup, steaming with noodles or cooking porridge.

Medicinal value of Viola yedoensis

Usage and dosage: For internal use: decoct in water, 0.5-1 liang (2-3 liang for fresh); mash into juice or grind into powder. For external use: mash and apply or boil into paste and apply.
