What is ITAR-TASS? ITAR-TASS (Russian: Информационное телеграфное агентство России-И�АР-ТАСС; abbreviated as ITAR-TASS, Russian News Agency; also translated as ITAR-TASS) is the largest news agency in Russia and one of the top five news agencies in the world, with its headquarters in Moscow. Its predecessor was the Petrograd News Agency, which was established on November 18, 1917. In 1918, it merged with the Press Bureau of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee and was named Russian News Agency, abbreviated as Rosta. On July 10, 1925, it was renamed TASS. On January 22, 1992, Russian President Yeltsin signed an order to merge TASS with part of the former Soviet News Agency to form a new national news agency, Russian News Agency. At the same time, an independent TASS agency was retained in RIA Novosti, and from the 30th of that month, it began to publish news under the name of RIA Novosti.
