Yesterday morning, the "2011 Guangzhou Vegetable New Variety Exhibition" opened at the new Nansha site of Guangzhou Academy of Agricultural Sciences. 261 new vegetable varieties including broccoli, kale, Chinese cabbage, peppers, eggplants, tomatoes, glutinous corn, etc. were unveiled at the new Nansha base. More than 200 people, including growers from professional vegetable markets and professional villages in Guangzhou and representatives of seed merchants, attended the exhibition.

The reporter saw colorful tomatoes hanging on the branches and leaves, as well as eggplants shaped like watermelons, attracting numerous vegetable farmers to consult and learn from them. "In addition to red and green, tomatoes also come in purple, orange, pink, purple-red, and yellow-white. They are both ornamental and taste great. Their sugar content is 10%, which is twice as high as the ordinary tomatoes we eat now. This new variety of fruit also has some characteristics, namely, it is not easy to crack, has strong disease resistance, and has a high yield, with an output of more than 5,000 kilograms per mu." Lin Jianrong, director of the Vegetable Research Institute of the Guangzhou Academy of Agricultural Sciences, said, "These are all natural foods, produced through genetic hybridization."

Luo Xirong from Fengma Village, Hengli, Nansha, took a tour of the site and finally stopped in front of the "11S21 Eggplant" display stand. He picked up the new variety with both hands and looked at it over and over again. "The color is good. I have been growing eggplants for five years, and this is the first time I have seen such high-quality eggplants." Luo Xirong said, "The eggplants I grow now sell for 1 yuan per catty in bulk, but this eggplant is dark purple in color and is neither too big nor too small. If I sell it outside, I can sell it for at least 1.4 yuan per catty."

Luo Xirong told reporters that he currently has 13 acres of land planting ordinary eggplants, and hopes to use this new variety next season. "I heard that the yield is very high, with an output of 5,000 kilograms per acre. I hope to increase both production and income."

Lin Jinying, a researcher at the Vegetable Research Institute of Guangzhou Academy of Agricultural Sciences, told reporters that the 261 new varieties on display are currently in the experimental stage in major agricultural academies and seed companies. After the trial planting is successful, the seeds will be selected in different regions and will be planted on a large scale only after they are approved.

"It will take at least four to five years to launch the product on the market." Lin Jinying said that the Guangzhou Academy of Agricultural Sciences has successfully cultivated more than 10 vegetable varieties, including Chinese cabbage, wax gourd, loofah, rice, etc., "and the most successful one is the late Chinese cabbage."
