Differences between Brome and Wild Oats

Brome and wild oats are the most common weeds in wheat fields. If they are not controlled in time, they will affect the normal growth of wheat. However, brome is more harmful than wild oats. However, brome and wild oats look very similar. Many people cannot tell them apart and do not know how to clean them. In fact, there are obvious differences between brome and wild oats. Next, we will introduce the differences between them.

Differences between Brome and Wild Oats

1. Rhizome

There are obvious differences in the rhizomes of brome and wild oats. The rhizomes of brome are mostly reddish brown, while the roots of wild oats are mostly white. If you pull them all out of the ground and put them together, you can see it very clearly. This is the biggest difference between the two.

2. Blades

There are also obvious differences between brome and wild oats in their leaves. Brome has a large amount of white hairs on its leaf surface, and its leaves are thin and narrow. Wild oats also have hairs on their leaf surface but they are mostly dark yellow and wider. The leaves grow in a counterclockwise direction, while brome's leaves mostly grow directly outward.

3. Leaf ear

The difference between brome and wild oats is also reflected in their auricles. Although they both belong to the Poaceae family, brome does not have auricles, while wild oats do. Brome has obvious hairs on the leaf margins, while wild oats only have inverted hairs on the leaf margins. Brome and wild oats also have obvious differences in the ligule. The ligule of wild oats has irregular tooth-like fissures, but the ligule of brome does not have this feature.

4. Wheat ears

Brome and wild oats both grow ears after maturity, but the shape of their ears is also obviously different. Brome ears are like rice, but wild oats ears are like swallow tails after maturity. Brome and wild oats also have certain differences in leaf sheaths. Brome leaf sheaths have obvious fluff, while wild oats have no fluff.
