Nutritional value of snowman crab

The Yeti crab was discovered in March 2005 around a hydrothermal vent about 1.5 miles under the South Pacific Ocean off the coast of Easter Island. It is about 15 centimeters in size and its furry appearance easily reminds people of the legendary Himalayan Yeti.

Researchers have confirmed that bacteria are the main source of diet for the yeti crab. The yeti crab knows how to cultivate its bacterial garden by waving its claws. Waving the claws can stir the water around the bacteria, ensuring a fresh supply of oxygen and sulfide washing, all of which can help the growth of bacteria.

Yeti crabs are not the only organisms that host bacteria. Two other crustaceans that live near hydrothermal vents on the seafloor - the Coleus scutellaria and the Atlantic eyeless slit shrimp - also have similar behaviors of cultivating bacteria on their bodies.
