Crab apple

Huahong (scientific name: Malus asiatica), also known as Shaguo (Hebei), Wenlinlangguo (Compendium of Materia Medica), Lingong (Illustrated Explanation of Common Trees in Hebei), is a plant of the genus Malus in the Rosaceae family. It is a deciduous small tree with ovate or elliptical leaves.

Crab apple

The top is abruptly pointed, with very fine serrations on the edge. It blooms in spring and summer, arranged in an umbrella shape at the top of the branches, with pedicels and calyxes covered with hairs. The buds are red, but fade with a blush after opening. The fruit matures in autumn, is oblate, 4-5 cm in diameter, and yellow or red. It is widely distributed in the Yellow River and Yangtze River basins of mainland China, growing in areas with an altitude of 50 to 1,300 meters, often growing on hillsides, flat land, and valley terraces. It tastes like an apple when eaten raw, and there are many varieties. It can be propagated by grafting, sowing, and division, and is a plant endemic to China.
