What are the functions of pomegranate peel

What are the functions of pomegranate peel

We all know that pomegranate is a delicious fruit and has certain nutritional value. But do you know that pomegranate peel has certain value? Here are the 6 functions of pomegranate peel. We can keep the pomegranate peel when we eat pomegranate.

1. The astringent effect of pomegranate peel

Pomegranate peel contains a lot of substances. When they come into contact with mucous membranes, wounds, etc., they can precipitate or coagulate local proteins to form a denser protective layer on the surface, which helps local wound healing or protects the local area from irritation.

2. Antibacterial Effects of Pomegranate Peel

Pomegranate peel decoction has antibacterial effect on Shigella, Strombus, Flexneri and Sonne in vitro, with the strongest effect on Shigella, Strombus and Flexneri, and the weakest effect on Shigella. Comparison of the in vitro bactericidal effects of 400 kinds of Chinese medicine on Salmonella typhi, Vibrio cholerae, Staphylococcus, etc., proved that pomegranate peel has the strongest inhibitory effect on Salmonella typhi. In addition, in vitro experiments have shown that it has inhibitory effects on various bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Escherichia coli, Proteus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Oral administration of pomegranate peel decoction or intraperitoneal injection of pomegranate peel alcohol extract on the in vivo test of mice inoculated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa after scalding has no obvious protective effect. Pomegranate peel water extract (1:4) has different degrees of inhibitory effect on various skin fungi such as Trichophyton tinctorius and Trichophyton concentricum in vitro. The above antibacterial effects may be related to the large amount of binders contained.

3. Antiviral Effects of Pomegranate Peel

The chicken embryo method experiment proved that the pomegranate peel decoction diluted to 1:10,000-1:100,000 still has the effect of inhibiting influenza virus (type A PR8 strain). Using cell culture technology, it is confirmed that the pomegranate peel is the effective component of the pomegranate peel against genital herpes virus. Its characteristics not only inhibit the proliferation of viruses in cells, but more importantly, it shows a strong direct killing of viruses and the effect of blocking and adsorbing cells.

4. Pomegranate peel’s insect repellent effect

Pomegranate peel decoction has the effect of expelling intestinal worms. Its mechanism is to act on the muscles of parasites, causing them to fall into continuous contraction, thus having the effect of expelling worms.

5. Other uses of pomegranate peel

A compound was isolated from the methanol extract of pomegranate peel, which has a strong inhibitory effect on the carbonic anhydrase activity of bovine erythrocytes. The inhibition rate is 80.2% at 1ug/kg and 83.3% at 10ug/ml. Pomegranate peel is decocted in water and the residue is removed and given to rabbits by gavage twice a day to treat diarrhea caused by digestive disorders and loss of physiological balance in rabbits.

6. Toxicity of pomegranate peel

Pomegranate peel contains a lot of alkaloids, which can irritate the gastrointestinal mucosa. The toxicity of total alkaloids in pomegranate peel is about 25 times that of pomegranate peel. The toxicity to frogs, mice, guinea pigs, rabbits and cats is movement disorders and respiratory paralysis. Total alkaloids in pomegranate peel have a temporary excitatory effect on the heart, slowing the heartbeat; they have a nicotinic effect on the autonomic nerves, 1g/kg causing the pulse to slow down and blood pressure to rise, and large doses can significantly speed up the pulse; they have a veratridine-like effect on skeletal muscle.

The above are the 6 functions of pomegranate peel. You can take a look at them.
