Can you still eat bayberry if it has worms?

"Yangmei has worms" Weibo post attracted 20,000 people to forward

After the "Yangmei has worms" microblog appeared, more than 20,000 netizens forwarded it in more than a day, and thousands of netizens commented, "I feel creepy when I think that I may have eaten this worm."

Netizen "瑞渚Yuki" said on Weibo that he personally witnessed insects coming out of the bayberry with salt water. "There are indeed insects in the bayberry! I was shocked and disgusted! I am most afraid of insects, and I didn't know about them before. I will never eat bayberry again!"

Some netizens blamed the "fleshy" and "chewy" taste of bayberry on the bugs, and worried that they "already have a stomach full of bugs."

"Every bayberry has worms. You can see their delicate bodies by soaking them in salt water for half an hour. These worms are rich in nutrients needed by the human body, so some children who like to eat bayberries become fat."

Recently it is the season when bayberry is on the market. A Weibo post on the Internet about "eating bayberry = eating bugs" attracted the attention of many netizens. In the picture accompanying the Weibo post, a white wriggling bug was crawling out of the dark red bayberry flesh. This scene made many netizens call it "disgusting" and said they would never eat bayberry again.

On June 14, 2011, the reporter visited several fruit stores in the city. Most of the citizens who came to buy bayberries did not know that there might be insects hidden in bayberries. Are there insects in bayberries? It seems that only on-site experiments can give the answer.

Three trials

Soak bayberry in three groups

In order to verify the truth of the Weibo content, a reporter from Tianfu Morning Post purchased two batches of bayberries from different locations in Chengdu for testing.

Each batch of bayberries weighs about half a pound, about 12 pieces. One batch was purchased from a fruit store; another batch was purchased from street vendors. When I was picking them, I didn't find any white bugs on them.

In the experiment, two bayberries were divided into one portion.

One part is soaked in clean water, one part is soaked in salt water, and the other part is soaked in white wine.

Soaking bayberry in white wine

After 10 minutes, three or four live insects immediately emerged from the bayberries soaked in white wine. They were milky white and slightly yellow, with soft bodies that kept twisting. If you don't observe carefully with the naked eye, it's hard to tell. Ten minutes after the insects crawled out, they sank to the bottom of the water due to the stimulation of alcohol and stopped moving.

Half an hour later, I could see a few white floating objects in the salt water cup, each only two or three millimeters long, twisting and turning in the water. On another large bayberry, I saw a small white dot, but it was difficult to tell with the naked eye whether it was a bug.

There was not a single bug on the bayberries soaked in clear water.

Can you eat bayberry even if it has worms?

Soaking bayberries in salt water is the most effective way to remove insects, as it can remove impurities and keep the bayberries fresh. Soaking them in white wine may speed up the removal of insects, but it will destroy the taste of the bayberries. Soaking them in plain water has no effect at all.
