Identification method of sodium nitrite edible salt

Identification method of sodium nitrite edible salt

You may have heard of sodium nitrite. It is a common industrial salt in life. It is toxic and cannot be eaten by humans, otherwise it will cause poisoning. However, some vendors in life will sell sodium nitrite as edible salt for profit. So how to distinguish sodium nitrite from edible salt? Today, I will write down the identification method of sodium nitrite and edible salt, and you will understand it after reading it.

Identification method of sodium nitrite edible salt

1. The appearance of sodium nitrite and edible salt is different

The difference between table salt and sodium nitrite in appearance is that table salt is a white opaque crystalline powder with no obvious odor, while sodium nitrite is yellow or light yellow transparent crystals. When the two are put together, they can be distinguished at a glance.

2. Identification with potassium permanganate

Sodium nitrite and table salt can be identified by potassium permanganate. When identifying, you can take a bean-sized amount of sodium nitrite and table salt and put them in two different cups, add clean water to dissolve them, and then add potassium permanganate. If the color of the water in the cup changes, it is sodium nitrite. If the color of the water in the cup does not change, it is table salt.

3. Identify by water temperature

Sodium nitrite and edible salt can also be distinguished by water temperature. After sodium nitrite is put into a cup and then clean water is added, the water temperature will rise rapidly, while after clean water is added to edible salt, the temperature will not rise. This is the simplest way to distinguish sodium nitrite from edible salt. When you buy bulk edible salt, if you find something wrong, you must identify it to avoid accidentally ingesting sodium nitrite, otherwise there will be a serious poisoning reaction.
