How to grow overwintering shallots

The earlier shallots are available in the spring, the fresher they are and the higher their price will be. Therefore, many vegetable farmers want to grow some winter shallots in order to increase their income. However, they do not know much about the planting method of winter shallots and dare not plant them blindly. In fact, the planting method of winter shallots is not difficult. I will take you to learn more about it in a while.

How to grow overwintering shallots

1. Planting time for winter shallots

Winter shallots should be planted around October each year. When planting, you should choose a flat, well-drained, and fertile plot. Winter shallots do not require high soil pH, but slightly alkaline soil is more conducive to the growth of shallots. Before sowing, the land should be deeply plowed and sufficient base fertilizer should be applied.

2. Insulation treatment of overwintering shallots

When planting winter shallots, it is important to keep them warm. The simplest way is to cover the ground with straw after planting the shallot seeds for insulation. However, with this insulation method, the shallots can only sprout in the spring of the second year, and will be put on the market later. Another insulation method is to build a small arch shed. When building it, you can use some bamboo slabs to make a support, and then take an appropriate amount of plastic cloth to cover the support.

3. Field management of overwintering shallots

The root system of shallots is relatively shallow, so it is not suitable to apply concentrated fertilizers during the growth period. Urea should be diluted into fertilizer water before topdressing. In addition, weeds in the field should be removed in time during the growth period of winter shallots. Special attention should be paid when watering. Do not water too much. Use small amounts of water frequently to keep the soil moist. The young leaves of shallots are mainly edible. They should be harvested in time after they grow up. Aging will deteriorate the taste and affect their quality.
