Introduction to Cowpea

An annual twining herbaceous plant of the Fabaceae family, commonly known as carob, ginger bean, and ribbon bean. Cowpea is divided into two types: long cowpea and rice cowpea. There are 3 leaflets. The terminal leaflet is rhombus-ovate, 5-13 cm long, 4-7 cm wide, with an acute apex, a nearly rounded or broad cuneate base, and glabrous on both sides. The calyx is bell-shaped and glabrous; the corolla is lavender, about 2 cm long, and there are light yellow whiskers on the upper part of the style. The pods are linear, drooping, and can reach 40 cm long. The flowering and fruiting period is from June to September.
