Atractylodes macrocephala is the rhizome of Atractylodes macrocephala, a plant of the Asteraceae family. Atractylodes macrocephala is a perennial herb that grows on hillsides, forest edges and shrubs, and is distributed in the Yangtze River Basin. It is now cultivated in many parts of the country, with the largest number in Zhejiang. From late October to mid-November, after the above-ground part withers, dig the roots on a sunny day, remove the soil, cut off the stems, and dry the rhizomes, or dry them in the sun. The rhizomes of Atractylodes macrocephala are irregular, thick masses, 3 to 13 cm long and 1.5 to 7 cm in diameter. The surface is grayish yellow or grayish brown, with tumor-like protrusions and intermittent longitudinal wrinkles and grooves, and there are whisker marks, with residual stem bases and root buds at the top. It is hard and not easy to break, with an uneven cross section, yellow-white to light brown, with brown oil-like oil chambers scattered in the cross section. The cross section of the dried one is horny, darker in color, with cracks, a fresh fragrance, sweet, slightly spicy, and slightly sticky when chewed. Large, solid, white in cross section, and with a strong aroma are preferred.
