After the 1980s, peach breeders in my country used nectarine varieties introduced from abroad to cross with common peach varieties in my country, and cultivated a series of nectarine varieties with sweet flavors that are adapted to my country's environmental and climatic conditions. They have been widely promoted in production, especially in some emerging peach-producing areas, where the development area is much larger than that of ordinary peaches. At present, my country's peach production is still dominated by ordinary peaches, while nectarines are welcomed by growers and consumers because of their smooth and hairless fruit surface, convenient picking and eating, and beautiful appearance. They are in a rapid growth stage in production and are expected to occupy a larger proportion in future peach production.

The difference between nectarines and ordinary peaches

1. The skin of nectarine is hairless, smooth, shiny, and brightly colored, as if it were coated with oil; the skin of ordinary peaches is fuzzy, reddish or slightly yellowish, and dull. 2. The skin of nectarine is difficult to peel; the skin of ordinary peaches can be peeled when they are ripe. 3. The flesh of nectarine is crisp and has relatively less water; ordinary peaches are crisp when raw, soft when ripe, and have a lot of water. 4. Nectarines are available earlier; ordinary peaches are available a little later. However, because different varieties of ordinary peaches mature at different times, they can be sold from early summer to late autumn.

The surface of any other peach is hairy, but the nectarine is called nectarine because its surface is smooth and oily, hairless, and as smooth as the surface of apples and plums. The surface of other peaches is only partially red, but the entire surface of nectarine is bright red, just like cherries. Therefore, nectarine is very popular in the market for its hairless skin, bright red fruit color, and dazzling appearance. It is a new emerging fruit popular in the international market. Experts predict that nectarine will gradually replace other peaches and dominate the world. The 21st century is the era of nectarine.

The dozen varieties promoted by Chongqing Forestry and Fruit Research Institute and Longquan Horticulture Research Institute are extremely high-yielding and have significant economic benefits. Taking a four-year-old tree as an example, the average yield per mu is 3,500-4,000 kg, and it can exceed 6,500 kg during the peak production period. Moreover, the yield is stable and the continuous fruiting ability is strong. ④ Some varieties of nectarines that are resistant to storage and transportation have crisp and hard fruits after maturity, and are extremely resistant to long-distance transportation. The storage and transportation resistance of nectarines is much better than that of peaches.
