The Story of Sister-in-law Bird

There is a sad and beautiful legend about bayberry in Chaoshan.

It is said that in ancient times, there was an aunt and a sister-in-law who depended on each other for survival. The younger aunt was clever and good at embroidering flowers, but she had not yet learned how to do it because the bayberry flowers bloomed for a very short time. One year, the younger aunt insisted on going up the mountain on New Year's Eve to observe the shape of the bayberry flowers, but was unfortunately killed by a tiger. The sister-in-law went up the mountain to look for her the next day, calling for her sister-in-law all over the mountain, and saw bloodstains. She then realized that the sister-in-law had been killed by a tiger. She cried out intermittently, "Aunt-tiger, Aunt-tiger," and finally turned into a blue bird. The Chaoshan folk story "Aunt-sister-in-law Bird" was born from this. To this day, when bayberries are produced, there must be a "sister-in-law bird" flying to the Bayberry Mountain, crying "Aunt-tiger, Aunt-tiger...", which is heartbreaking to hear.
