Pigweed

The leaves of the galium are finely toothed, often needle-shaped, and arranged in whorls of 4 to 8. The flowers are small, clustered, green, yellow or white. The fruit is hard, round, and two are fused together.

Morphological characteristics

Multi-branched, creeping or climbing herbs, usually 30-90 cm high; stems with 4 angular edges; small inverted prickles on the edges, leaf margins and veins. Leaves are papery or nearly membranous, 6-8 pieces in whorls, rarely 4-5 pieces, ribbon-shaped or oblong-oblanceolate, 1-5.5 cm long, 1-7 mm wide, with needle-like convex tips at the top, gradually narrowed at the base, often with closely attached prickly hairs on both sides, often withered, often curled when dry, 1-veined, nearly sessile. Cymes are axillary or terminal, with few to many flowers, small flowers, 4-numbered, with slender pedicels; calyx is hooked, calyx margin is nearly truncate; corolla is yellow-green or white, radial, lobes are oblong, less than 1 mm long, arranged in a valvate shape; ovary is hairy, style is 2-lobed to the middle, stigma capitate. The fruit is dry, with 1 or 2 nearly spherical segmented fruit valves, up to 5.5 mm in diameter, swollen, densely covered with hooked hairs, and a straight fruit stalk up to 2.5 cm long and relatively thick, with 1 flat convex seed in each valve. Flowering period is March to July, and fruiting period is April to November.

The efficacy and function of pigweed

1. Treatment of breast cancer ulcers: 180 grams of fresh pigweed, decoct in water and take once a day for 7 consecutive days. Mash fresh grass to extract juice and apply with lard to the affected area, changing 3-6 times a day.

2. Treatment of leukemia: 60 grams of Polygonum multiflorum, 30 grams each of Scutellaria barbata, Scutellaria baicalensis, and Rhizoma Nyctaginii, decocted in water and taken, 1 dose per day for 1-2 months.

3. Treatment of acute cystitis: 30 grams each of Polygonum multiflorum and Herba Lycopodii, 10 grams of Honeysuckle, decocted in water and taken for 3-5 days.

4. To treat wind-heat cold: 60 grams of Pigweed and 15 grams of Isatis indigotica, decocted in water and taken for 3-5 days.

5. To treat swelling and pain from falls: 120g each of the root of Polygonum multiflorum and the root of Smilax glabra, decocted in half water and half wine.

6. Treatment of bleeding gums: 50 grams of Polygonum multiflorum and 20 grams of Rhizoma Cyperi, decocted in water, divided into 3-5 times, 1 dose per day.

7. To treat hematuria and bloody stool: 30g each of Glechoma longituba and Imperata cylindrica, 15g of Agrimony granadilla, decocted in water and taken orally.

8. Treatment of amenorrhea: 20 grams of Glechoma longituba, 10 grams of Cyperus rotundus, 30 grams of Leonurus japonicus, decocted in water, taken in 2-3 times, for 3-5 days.

9. Treatment of cervical cancer: decoct 30 grams of Polygonum multiflorum in water, add appropriate amount of brown sugar and take it in 2-3 times, 1 dose per day, continuously.

10. To treat cold and fever: decocted in water 30g of whole plant of Polygonum multiflorum (or 60g of fresh product).

11. To treat abdominal pain during menstruation: decoct in water 15g of whole herb of Glehnia littoralis and 6g of Leonurus japonicus.

12. To treat appendicitis: decoct 250 grams of fresh pigweed in water and take it in divided doses.

13. To treat injuries from falls: take equal parts of fresh pigweed and sour chicken, mash them together and apply them to the affected area.

14. To treat lacquer sores: Crush fresh Polygonum multiflorum and apply the juice to the affected area.

15. To treat snake bites: mash fresh Pigweed and apply it to the affected area, and use 120 grams of fresh grass, decoct in water and drink.

The usual dosage of this product for oral administration is 90-180 grams of fresh product and 30-60 grams of dry product.

[Usage and Dosage] 50~100 grams; For external use, mash the fresh product and apply it to the affected area or squeeze the juice and apply it to the affected area.

[Harvesting and processing] Harvest during the flowering and fruiting period in summer, remove mud and sand, and dry in the sun.
