Papaya origin, growing environment and varieties

Papaya is a tropical and subtropical fruit. It has a very good beauty effect and is best eaten by postpartum women.

pawpaw

It is also called Haitang Pear and Tiejiao Pear. Papaya has smooth and beautiful skin, thick and delicate flesh, rich aroma, abundant juice, sweet and delicious, rich in nutrition. It is known as "fruit of a hundred benefits", "king of fruits" and "longevity melon". It is one of the four famous fruits in Lingnan, and is called "three major tropical herbaceous fruit trees" together with bananas and pineapples.

Papaya is not only fragrant and crispy, but also has the medical effects of removing dampness, relaxing muscles, and soothing the stomach. Papaya is rich in more than 17 kinds of nutrients, including papain and papain. Its vitamin C content is 48 times that of apples. Half a medium-sized papaya is enough to provide a day's worth of vitamin C. Therefore, papaya is also known as the "longevity fruit" in China.

According to the ancient Chinese medicine book "Compendium of Materia Medica", papaya can cure cholera, vomiting, diarrhea, cramps, and beriberi, all of which are spleen and stomach diseases, not liver diseases. Although the liver governs the tendons, cramps are caused by damp heat, cold and dampness attacking the spleen and stomach, so cramps must start from the peroneus, and the peroneus and the main tendons belong to Yangming. Papaya can cure cramps, not to benefit the tendons, but to regulate the spleen and attack the liver. When the earth is sick, the metal will decline and the wood will flourish. Therefore, sour and warm herbs are used to collect the dissipation of the spleen and stomach, and to use them to move the tendons to calm the liver evil, which is to drain the wood in the earth to help the metal. When the wood is calm, the earth will be in command and the metal will be shaded. "Suwen" says: Sourness moves the tendons, and those with tendon diseases should not eat too much sour food. Meng Shen said: Eating too much papaya will damage teeth and bones. All of them are clear evidence of attacking the liver, and papaya enters the hands and the foot Taiyin, which is a spleen and stomach medicine, not a liver medicine, which is beneficial. "Bencao Shiyi" also records: papaya can relieve coldness, strengthen bones and muscles, help digestion, and stop thirst after dysentery. Take it as a drink. Also, if beriberi attacks the heart, take one, remove the seeds, and boil it. The tender ones are better. It can also stop vomiting, phlegm and saliva in the heart.

Since ancient times, papaya has been loved by countless poets, who have written many popular poems on papaya. There is a line in "The Book of Songs·Wei Feng·Papaya" that says "Throw me a papaya, and I will repay you with a jade pendant". Cao Rong of the Qing Dynasty also wrote a poem "Nanpu·Papaya": "The courtyard is full of fragrance, and it is good to transplant the green porcelain and sycamore trees into two wells. I still remember the stamens when they were first contained, the traces of makeup were light, and they were delicate and quiet like pear trees. When I was rubbing my forehead, I felt the coldness of my light clothes. The fairy dew formed a ball, and the autumn color was playing, and the green was getting harder to determine. I picked it and took it back to the Pearl Pavilion to snuggle up, but the gentleness did not change, it was the nature of the flower. Who can bear the fragrance? In the Luopa, I bought a jade plate and reflected it high. I woke up from a deep sleep, and my slender hands and fragrance condensed at night. Tomorrow, I will tease the spring love, and I will also cure people's sorrow."

Origin

Papaya is native to China and is now cultivated in Shandong, Henan, Shaanxi, Anhui, Jiangsu, Hubei, Sichuan, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Guangdong, Guangxi and other provinces. Papaya is native to southern Mexico and the adjacent Central America region. It is now mainly distributed in Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka in Southeast Asia, Central and South America, the West Indies, Florida, Hawaii, Cuba and Australia in the United States. In my country, it is mainly distributed in Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi, Yunnan, Fujian, Taiwan and other provinces.

Growth environment

Papaya is a temperate tree species with strong adaptability, light-loving, semi-shade-tolerant, cold-resistant and drought-resistant. It is not demanding on soil and can grow normally in fertile, well-drained clay and loam, but avoids low-lying and saline-alkali land.

variety

There are several main varieties of papaya:

Wrinkled papaya, also known as crabapple with stems, papaya with stems, and iron-footed pear. The fruit peel is slightly wrinkled 7 to 10 days after ripening, hence the name wrinkled papaya. The fruit can be made into a variety of foods such as candied fruit, jam, and juice. The dried fruit is used for medicinal purposes. Wrinkled papaya is a mainstream product of Chinese medicinal papaya.

Papaya with smooth skin is also known as papaya crabapple, dragon-subduing wood, Fengshui tree, cantaloupe, papaya, hawthorn, wood plum, and wood pear. It is a deciduous shrub or small tree. Papaya with smooth skin is mainly for viewing. You can enjoy the flowers in early summer and the fruits in autumn. It is also very beautiful when it turns red at night in late autumn. After 5 to 8 years, the seedlings will enter the flowering and fruiting period. The medicinal effect of papaya with smooth skin is very small. Because its fruit is still smooth and not wrinkled after drying, it is called papaya with smooth skin.

Papaya, also known as wood peach, is native to southwest China. It is a deciduous shrub to small tree, with ovoid or nearly cylindrical fruits that can be used as medicine but are not edible.
