Introduction to Banlangen Congee

Banlangen Congee is a medicinal and edible porridge made of Banlangen, Prunella vulgaris, polished rice and a proper amount of sugar. It has the effects of clearing away heat and detoxifying, cooling blood and dispersing stagnation. It is suitable for patients with mumps, swelling, pain, fever and lumps, and fever, aversion to cold, headache, sore throat, dry mouth, yellow urine, and general fatigue caused by wind-heat cold.

Summer is here, and the weather is getting hot. It is very easy to catch a cold at this time, because it is caused by the heat and then the cold, so it is also called "heat cold". "Heat cold" is called "yinshu" in traditional Chinese medicine. It is often caused by the large difference in indoor and outdoor temperatures, which leads to occlusion of sweat pores. The stimulation of sudden cold and heat induces symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, sore throat, dry mouth, yellow urine, and general fatigue. The use of medicine for "heat cold" is very particular. If you use medicine indiscriminately without distinguishing the types, it will only aggravate the condition! Heat cold is actually a common cold in summer. Colds are particularly seasonal, but each season has its own type. For example, colds in winter and spring are mostly caused by wind-cold, wind-heat colds are more common in autumn, and summer colds are mostly caused by summer heat and humidity, which is what we often call "heat cold".

Traditional Chinese medicine usually divides it into wind-cold syndrome, wind-heat syndrome and summer-damp syndrome. Heat colds are mostly caused by the opening of the human body's sweat pores and the leakage of sweat in a hot environment. This is the period when the body's resistance is reduced, and the body is affected by wind evil. Some people feel the natural wind, while others feel the cold wind from the air conditioner. In short, the wind evil suddenly blocks the sweat pores, and the heat and sweat cannot be released, and the heat is trapped in the human body. According to traditional Chinese medicine theory, "the lungs govern the skin and fur, and the nose is the opening point." The skin and fur of the lungs that are connected to the outside world are first attacked by external evil. The evil qi is blocked in the human body, causing nasal congestion, voice blockage, sneezing, irritability, thirst, heavy head, and fatigue. Some patients with fever will feel that even if they sweat, the heat will not subside. This is the characteristic of heat cold fever. Modern medicine also believes that spring is the period of vigorous growth and reproduction of microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses. Viruses and bacteria enter the human body through various channels, causing inflammation of the oral cavity and upper respiratory tract, causing people to suffer from upper colds. At the same time, the cause of this disease is closely related to the unpredictable climate change in spring.

For northern regions with less precipitation in spring, when the cold air passes and the sun shines brightly, the surface temperature rises quickly during the day, reaching more than 20 degrees Celsius, and the strong radiation cooling at night causes the temperature to drop rapidly to below 10 degrees Celsius. This makes it easier for some people with weak bodies, low upper respiratory tract disease resistance, and busy work to catch cold, inducing "heat cold". In addition, in places where air conditioning is used, ventilation is usually poor and the air is not circulating, which makes it easier to induce heat cold. The main manifestations of heat cold are wind-heat syndrome, which is manifested by severe fever, slight aversion to wind, swelling and pain in the head, sweating, red and swollen throat and pain, cough, sticky or yellow phlegm, nasal congestion and runny yellow nose, thirst and love of drinking. Wind-cold syndrome is manifested by severe aversion to cold, mild fever, no sweating, headache and body pain, nasal congestion and runny clear nose, cough and spitting thin white phlegm, no thirst or thirst and love of hot drinks. The symptoms of summer-dampness syndrome include fever, slight aversion to wind, little sweat, soreness or pain in the limbs, dizziness, heaviness and pain in the head, cough with sticky phlegm, turbid nasal discharge, irritability, thirst or sticky mouth, chest tightness, and short and dark urine.
