Oyster Porridge

The efficacy of oyster porridge

An international research team led by the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shenzhen BGI Genomics Institute has completed the sequencing, assembly and analysis of the Pacific oyster, the first sequenced mollusk genome, which will help fill the gaps in our understanding of the rich but less studied mollusk family. The study, published online in the journal Nature, reveals the oyster's unique adaptation to high-pressure environments and the complex mechanism of shell formation.

In this study, researchers sequenced and assembled the Pacific oyster genome using short reads combined with a "divide and conquer" fosmid merging strategy. This is a new method developed by Shenzhen BGI Genomics Institute that can be used to study genomes with high levels of heterozygosity and/or repetitive sequences. After data processing, the assembled oyster genome is approximately 559Mb with a total of approximately 28,000 genes.
