It is the fruit of the evergreen tree pomelo of the Rutaceae family and is one of the six famous fruits in Zhangzhou.

Pomelo is native to China and has a cultivation history of more than 2,500 years. The "Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing Ji Zhu" simply calls it "you", "Erya" calls it "tiao", "Guang Zhi" calls it "Leiyou", Tao Hongjing first called it "youzi", and there are also "Hugan", "Choucheng", "Chouyou", "Zhuluan", "Xiangluan", "Wendan", and many other names.

The leaves of pomelo are similar to those of tangerines and oranges, but the petioles have wide wings, and the lower surface of the leaves and young branches have short hairs. The flowers are large and white. The fruit is large, spherical or nearly pear-shaped, and lemon yellow; the flesh is white or red, divided into lobes, which are easy to separate, and tastes sour and delicious. Among the many autumn fruits, pomelo can be regarded as the largest, generally weighing more than 1 kilogram. It matures around the 15th day of the eighth lunar month every year. The skin is thick and durable, and it can generally be stored for three months without losing its fragrance, so it is called "natural canned fruit".

The pomelo is round in shape, symbolizing reunion, so it is also the appropriate fruit for the Mid-Autumn Festival. More importantly, the word "柚" in pomelo is homophonic with the word "佑" in "佑" (protection), so pomelo is the child of blessing, which is considered to have auspicious meanings. Eating pomelo during the Chinese New Year symbolizes wealth and abundance. The word "柚" is homophonic with the word "有" (have), which means "big pomelo, big and rich", which means getting rid of bad luck and bringing good luck in the coming year.
