Is there a difference between grapefruit and pomelo? Many people will ask this question, but it is certain that there is a difference. Let me tell you the difference.

Is there a difference between grapefruit and pomelo?

Grapefruit, also known as "grapefruit", is the mature fruit of the Rutaceae plant pomelo. Its origin name in China is Huyou. It was introduced from Quzhou Prefecture, Zhejiang, China to Florida, USA by the Portuguese in 1830 and was called grapefruit. Among them, Changshan Huyou is a product of origin protection, called changshanhuyoutangelo.

Pomelo is an evergreen tree of the Rutaceae family. Its fruit is much larger than that of citrus fruits and has a thicker peel. When ripe, the peel is still green with a slight yellowish hue. The surface is rough, the flesh is juicy, sweet and sour with a slightly astringent taste, and there are many seeds. Pomelo is native to Thailand and the Malay Peninsula, and was later introduced to China. It is widely planted in southern China. Among them, the quality of the pomelo produced in Shatian, Guangxi is the best, so it is called "Shatian Pomelo".

Grapefruit has higher nutritional value

Grapefruit, which combines the advantages of pomelo and sweet orange, is highly praised by consumers for its high nutritional value. Hypertensive patients often take antihypertensive drugs to eliminate excess sodium in the body and maintain normal biochemical metabolic balance, but at the same time, they often cause the loss of essential potassium in the body. Potassium is very important for maintaining the functions of the heart, blood vessels, and kidneys. Grapefruit is a rare fruit that is rich in potassium and almost free of sodium. Therefore, it is the best therapeutic fruit for patients with hypertension, heart disease, and kidney disease. Studies have found that when the human body consumes too much high-fat, high-calorie food, there is excess nutrition, increased blood lipids, and a large amount of lipids, especially low-density lipoproteins, adhere to the inner wall of arteries, causing arteriosclerosis, leading to insufficient blood supply to important organs such as the heart, brain, and kidneys, causing heart disease or brain and kidney diseases. Grapefruit is rich in pectin, which can reduce the content of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, reduce damage to the walls of arterial blood vessels, maintain vascular function, and prevent heart disease. Grapefruit also contains natural folic acid. Folic acid is not only very important for early pregnancy, but also essential throughout pregnancy.

Grapefruit contains a lot of folic acid, while pomelo does not

During pregnancy, as the fetus's body tissues grow rapidly, pregnant women need a lot of folic acid to meet the needs of the fetus. Folic acid deficiency will not only increase the incidence of pregnancy-induced hypertension and placental abruption, but also cause pregnant women to suffer from megaloblastic anemia, intrauterine growth retardation of the fetus, premature birth and low birth weight of the newborn. Therefore, grapefruit is also the first choice of fruit for pregnant women. In addition, grapefruit is not only rich in nutritional value, but also helps to accelerate bone growth. The Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Hong Kong used grapefruit's ingredient - grapefruit glycosides for the first time to conduct experiments, proving that it can stimulate bone-building genes in cells, causing rabbits to grow new bones 4 times faster, one day faster than normal bone natural healing. It is expected that this technology will be widely used in the next few years.
